I just got 8s and 9s for my wife's GTO, and 8s and 9s for my 70 Roadrunner. Yesterday after a lot of research, on the GTO, I put BF Goodrich G-force comp 2s on the rear 9s, 275/40/17 and Comp 2 aw 245/45/17 on the front 8s. Very similar in appearance and a little softer compound for the rears.
I want a little more grip and width on my rear 9s, and the Continental Extreme Contact DW is available in a hard to find 285/40/17 size. Although the "recommended" minimum wheel width is 9.5" I have been told that even 295s could be put on a 9" wheel.
I don't care about cornering, but drag racing traction is what I want to improve. Nitto 555 or M/T drag radials are not an option as a pair of relatively new Nitto 555 drag radials put me in the grass between north and south bound interstates in a moderate rain storm in another car I had.
Suggestions? Anyone put 285/295 tires on a 9" wheel? Anyone using Continental Extreme Contact DW ?
Dedicated drag tires are not an option at this time.

I know it's not exactly what you were asking but i put 295/45/18 on a 9.5" wheel, and i see no reason they wouldn't be ok on a 9" wheel if the pressures are adjusted properly. I bought nitto 555 extreme performance tires but i have not driven the car yet so i really have no opinion on them at this time.

Thanks for the reply. WARNING!! Nitto 555 drag radials in a moderate rain at 60 mph or higher...I wound up in the grass (better than in the trees or oncoming traffic) in my 89 Conquest TSi!! and they were NOT worn down! I have decided to get the 285/40/17 Continental Extreme Contact DWs for my first rear tires on my 9x17" wheels. If I still have space in the rear fenderwells and leaf springs, and they don't bulge too bad, I will consider 295/40/17s after I burn up the Conti's

I have Nitto's, 275-40-17 on 17x10 rims. I think the 17x9's will be a tad small for the 285's???

Thanks. The BF Goodrich G-force comp 2 275/40/17 on a 9x17 for the rear of the GTO is a great fit. I am going to try the 285/40/17 in the Continental Extreme Contact DW on the cast aluminum rear 9x17 Mopar rallye style wheel on my 70 Roadrunner. I'll post pix.

Wow. Sorry, I forgot about this thread.
What I wound up getting, and still have on my 5" backspaced, 9"W x 17" diameter Year One aluminum Rallye rear wheels are Toyo Proxes TQ drag radials in 315/35/17. They are almost 11" treadwidth, and fit in the bone stock rear quarters and stock leaf spring position!
They have been great, even if the street gets wet. Decent traction on the 1320, and much better than the B.F. Goodrich T/A radials I had.

What size wheel, backspacing and tire are you running on the front? Any rub or turning problems?

8" W x 17" diameter 4.5" backspacing 245/45/17 no rubbing or turning problems, unlike with the 15" steel Rallye wheels and the BF Goodrich T/A radials I used to have up front.
