Hi Guys,
I am anticipating my next move on my 63 Polara and need advise from folks who have used 3000 or higher stall convertors in street cars. My combo is a 440, 9.5 compression, max wedge intake and exhaust and a comp 487 duration, 490 lift, 107 centerline cam. I have a 3:55 rear gear. Can I run a 3000 stall convertor without problems? The car will be street driven.
I guess I am wondering about trans heat, I have a cooler in addition to the radiator. At 60-70 mph will the engne run at 3000+ or will the car cruise at part throttle below the stall speed. I have had lots of hp cars, but never run a high stall convertor on the street. Any advise appreciated.

They make very good converters today that will cruise fine and work great at the track. I use a Dynamic 9.5 street/strip converter that drives like a normal car but will flash about 4200 at the track and launch nice getting me some air under the tires at good hooking tracks. And it drives like a stock converter as most of you know I drive my car all over the place. I use just an after market trans cooler in front of my rad and it works fine. I drove my 63 to Carlisle last summer in 65 degree hot humid days. Its about a 90 mile drive for me. I drove to York on Friday and went to their NSS indoor and outdoor show. Then Friday evening drove to the motel at Carlisle and put my car in the show Saturday and Sunday. Then drove home Sunday. All this in 95 degree or hotter weather with zero problems. I really like the 9.5 Dynamic converter I use since I drive my car so much and race it 2 or 3 times a year. Just make sure you use a good brand converter like Dynamic , Turbo Action , ATI , PTC , Coan , Ultimate or any good know quality converter. With your combo a 3000 to 3500 stall will work fine but talk to the guys you decide to buy from and let the experts recomend the right converter for you. I paid $675. for my Dynamic which is a ggod price for a good converter. Dont go cheap and buy the cheapest as you dont want to skimp on the converter because it can make or break a combo as a bad converter can really kill performance and driveability. Good luck , Ron

To answer your question, yes the converter will work fine. You could probably get away with a lower stall, 3000 is probably on the high side for your combo. Especially since you said its a street car. Just my opinion.

Bob pretty much the same specs in my car and also 3000 stall converter. I don't have hardly any drive time with it yet though. I don't have a cooler so I will have to be on the watch for over heating.

3000-3200 stall would be ideal.
9.5 or 10" is a correct size for your applicatuion.
