77 camper van. 318, 727 gearbox. Engine and gearbox are out and in the shed getting warm.
Are there any secrets to removing the gearbox from the engine?
Is it easier to reinstall both together, or the gear box first, then the engine.
I removed both together. I will be keeping the engine right side up. But turning over the gear box to install 10228 shift kit. Today I discovered the sump / oil pan, is blue, after I removed all the grease. I noticed some gaskets have been trying to escape. They will be replaced. Thank you all.

If it came out together it'll go in together. Make sure you remove the torque converter bolts before removing the transmision from the engine.remove the starter and stone shield first. Mark the flex plate and the converter at each bolt location. 1 & 1, 2 & 2, 3 &3, 4 & 4. The bolt pattern only fits one way. Then remove each bolt after rotating the crank 90 degrees. Removing the spark plugs will make this easier. Use a small C-clamp or vice grip attached to the bottom lip of the bellhousing to keep the converter from sliding out of the transmission. Now remove the 6 attaching bollts. When reinstalling the transmission, make sure the converter spins freely before tightening the 6 bolts that attach it to the block. Now start each converter bolt at the correct location. Tighten with-in 1/2 turn of being full tight. Don't leave them any looser or the heads will contact the block when you rotate the crank. Start all 4 before fully tightening all 4 of them.
