So I find the time to fix the rear main seal leak and track down the on again off again rattle, knock that I could not tell if it was a crack flexplate or a bottom end issue.

I get the transmission out and look what I found, I think the crank piece that broke off caused the torque convert weight to shake loose and well long story short I have a 390 stroker kit on the way.

Strange thing is the motor runs like a champ and doesn't even shake but I found the broken weight inside the bellhousing.

Please check my other thread for cam advice for the rebuild. 2013-09-17_15.14.48.jpg2013-09-179515.09.22.jpg2013-08-20_15.49.25.jpg2013-08-209515.48.06.jpg

Wow, It's kinda like my Haley buddy who had some needle bearings come out of his roller lifters and the only thing that made him think something was wrong is he heard a little dinging noise coming from the crankcase every once in a while.

Why would a 318 have a weighted converter since they are internally balance? Looks like it's still there tho. That small piece shouldn't knock any weight off the converter tho and shouldn't cause any vibration unless you were turning it some big rpm. It's just too close to the center line of the crank to cause a noticeable imbalance......

Not sure if it was the converter weight or what it was but it appeared to attached to the tc at one time?

The replacement converter I ordered has the same little pad in the place.

That weight seems to small for an externally balanced engine. I bet it's put there to just zero balance the converter - in other words a small correction.

Meep you are absolutely correct. This has nothing to do with overall balance. The balance weight would be on the front of the converter between the bolt pads, and that would depend mostly on which crank you have.

The weights on that converter are for converter balance only.

Car runs out and drives fine, I always had planned on a stroker kit now I guess I have excuse to do sooner than later.

Engine would probably run forever the way it is but call me paranoid but knowing that something is broke bothers me.

Poor spot weld? I have seen them come off before for no other reason.
Never had one come off before. I've read many posts about problems like upper shock supports coming loose and weights on converters coming off....and I've done nothing but beat the snot out of my cars including using air shocks lol. I know the two times I used an external balanced converter on an internally balanced engine, it took an act of congress to knock the weights off!

I guess it was just bad luck doubt congress had anything to do with as they don't do squat anyway :)
