So I'm building a 318 that came out of a 1973 charger and will be going back in. The cam i have is a summit street and strip cam. The duration is 272, and the lift is .454 . It will also have headers and a 4bbl intake. Can I use standard replacement 318 valve springs or 340 standard replacement valve springs? From what i have heard, the 340 springs are better because they have a damper, but also they can supposedly handle the extra lift.

My gut instinct is that the stock 340 springs would be OK. You might also check aftermarket performance springs too since they might be cheaper/same price. You do not need/want double springs (overkill for this cam).

Find out what the open and closed pressures callout for on the cam and then find your valvesprings pressures open and closed as installed. Dont just guess at this or you will end up with valvetrain issues and thats a headache.

A good set of 340 springs will work just fine or you could use these Comp Cam springs for $65.........

If you are 1.650 ish for installed height and need around 100 closed and 240 open.....

If you call ALEX at alexparts.com for a small deposit he will send out loaner parts to see what installed heights you are at. you send them back and he usually has great deals on springs as well, comp etc. Great dude too, very helpful.

The cams are ground by Crane dormSummit. Get there springs. There 272/.454 cam is the same thing.

Wow I didnt know that! So the summit racing cams are just rebranded crane cams? Cool.

NO! There custom for Summit racing. These cams can not be found in the Crane catalog. There found only at Summit Racing. Summit spec'd the cam and Crane made it. Crane has your spring. Base it on lift.
