I have a 79 Power Wagon with a 318 automatic. Its a farm truck, it starts and idles beutifully in park and neutral. Rev the motor in park and neutral it has no problems. The problem is when you put it in gear it dies instantly. Doesn't move at all one bit when its in drive or any other low gear. It never did this before but it has been sitting without running for about 2 years. I looked at all the vacuum lines and they are all hooked up. Didn't do anything to it since it last ran and drove it around about 2 years ago. What could it be? Needs carb rebuilt?

I would say you're accelerator pump is shot. Time for a rebuild.

Probably not the acc pump if it revs up ok w/o stumbling. Bad fuel, locked up brakes. Run it for awhile let it warm up good. T.C. might be locked up?

No, its not the brakes, bad fuel, or torque converter locked up. I can really rev the motor up high and slam it into gear and sometimes get lucky and it will run but I have to keep the revs up then it usually dies anyway

Check vacuum line to trans. Check trans fluid level. Check plug wires and cap. Check all the basics before rebuilding the carb ( which you may have to ). Hell check the acc pump and make sure it's squirting fuel.

most likely prob is the gas dryed out in the carb and left varnish in there plugging holes.if this is a carter carb, just pull the top and clean it out with carb cleaner.make sure you can blow through all the pasages.it may need a rebuild if you pull it apart and it has alot of build up.
