I have a pretty stock '68 318 that I am going to have to do a valve job on at some point soon. I have had this car for a year and Im not sure what the history of the heads is, but i'm pretty sure they have not been touched (about 100k miles).

I was thinking I would just get a set of later model stock heads with the hardened seats and get a 3 angle valve job done on them. Maybe some mild porting if the budget allows. I did a little reading on this and someone was talking about 'pocket porting', what is that?

Any ideas on this? Also, any idea what i should pay for the heads and the work?

On price, no.

Pocket porting AKA bowl porting is to remove the extra metal under, as in right under the valve, from where it sits installed to where it exits the head in the port.

This mod is best for larger cams than what is stock. If your going that route, then fine. If not, a comption valve job and a 1.60 exhaust is all I would recomend for the head on a stock engine.
A newer head with hardened seats is a good idea.
