i have been trying to figure out if these new covers will fit pre '70's motors, as '70's and up is how they are marketed. from what i have gathered, since the timing mark is on the drivers side on new covers and timing tab on the passenger side on pre '70's covers, to use the new ones you have to use the dampner and all pulleys from the post '70's motors. that would be a large extra expense. i guess my question is, can you use the timing tab on the new covers and just ignore the new marks? that way you can still use the early dampner and the same pulleys.
p.s. the cost of original covers is stupid. most are corroded anyway.

I don't know if you can use the timing tab on a new cover. I'll check tomorrow. I have the parts to do so.

As far as needing to swap EVERYTHING over, I don't see it. Why would that be?

I can't comment on new/old type timing covers.

However back when I had several small blocks, I worked out how to revive corroded timing case covers. I used a die grinder and ate away all the corrosion. Then built them back up with Aluminium Devcon (a 2-part metal filler.) JB Weld or similar could probably be used. I used short bits of PVC pipe/conduit with mold release on to shape the coolant passages and removed them before it fully set. Then just refaced the gasket face and hey presto. Lasted many many years.

I understand where you are coming from I paid $100 plus shipping for a used cover that was worse than the one I was replacing. If the O.E. timing tab won't fit you may be able to fab up one that will.Set T.D.C. and use a dial back timing light. If you don't have a dial back I'm sure you will find someone to borrow one from.Just a thought..

thanks for the replies guys. i figured the same thing about just remarking the balancer. first i think i will try 62 darts idea. i just so happen to have new tubes of jb weld on hand.

I just fitted the timing tab on the newer cover and it will clear no problem. So use the old damper and re use the timing tab.

The water pump will off set it a little.
