This is a good read on proper procedure. Doug's post#8 pretty much nails itIt’s been awhile but yes. I do have a timing tape that shows every 90 degrees
its in the title
Trickflow Valve Covers
Probably this. Some hydraulic roller cams (and some hyd flat tappets too) have aggressive valve timing events, and are kinda noisy as a result. Similar to a solid lifter tick, just a little more subdued.
The noise might be a function of the cam selected.
I have a 440/505 stroker with Trickflow 240 cylinder heads, hydraulic roller camshaft and Hughes roller rockers. I wanted to keep the stock look so I had to clearance the baffle in the valve covers and use a spacer. Otherwise they would hit.

Yes the holes were needed to clear the rocker arm adjustment screws where they were hitting. Those holes are where the adjustment screws are?
Where’d you get the the spacers?

Valve cover spacer sold through Ebay:

it does happen , I had that problem , out of dumbassedness , when I built my 505 , a lot of rocker sets have 2 intake rockers that are diff on the corners for just that reason , they go on the end valves , to clear the corners of the rocker covers ....raised port heads, and 600plus lift roller ...I still find it hard to believe rockers hitting the covers is your issue. Doesn't make sense.
It's not that it couldn't happen with various combos of parts.. but this is TF heads, with TF specific rockers, and TF valve covers. It works fine for TF, and I know people at the track with the same package that works as it should.it does happen , I had that problem , out of dumbassedness , when I built my 505 , a lot of rocker sets have 2 intake rockers that are diff on the corners for just that reason , they go on the end valves , to clear the corners of the rocker covers ....raised port heads, and 600plus lift roller ...
re read my post , there could be 2 intake rockers that have 45`d corners ...Any suggestions besides looking at the rockers for markings checking clearances once I get the covers off?
I have a feeling it’s not all of them hitting if at all. It’s not a loud rapping noise. Could be very slight hitting or the hydraulic roller lifters as suggested previously.
Got it thanksre read my post , there could be 2 intake rockers that have 45`d corners ...
If you see witness marks from the outer rockers maybe try a steel core gasket... those things are pretty thick.

Ahh ok, the title set me on the wrong path..
This one worked fine, but they were comp steel rockers.
Expect a typewriter sound with that set up running Harlan Sharps. If you would have used the Mancini 1.6 rockers made by Harland Sharp you would have almost zero noise. They are not there top of the line but most people love them and have quieter valve trains using them, especially complete roller motors and I am running this set up and my engine is way quieter than my buddy’s who used the top of the line HS rockers. What kind of preload adjustment do you use at the rocker?
