I guess that depends on the difference in price and what you are willing to spend. Both are good motors and both are readily available, so what do you mean by holding out for a 440? What car is this going in? Street or strip? Is it worth it to swap to a 383 from a 318 or should I hold out for a 440?
Thanks for the info. Even sitting wrist pins can seize, mice can get into valves and nest from exhaust ports or an open intake all depends on how well it was stored. So look into it and make sure it's clean and rotates. I would re-gasket it and check it good. See what cam is in it and maybe throw a new set of valve springs unless the rockers were removed for storage. Plan on putting some better gears in it like 3.55's.The 383 has been sitting for 5 years but was good prior. It's 1500 motor and tranny. I've only found 1 440 in the area that looks like it came out of a car. It's about twice as much, engine only.
It's going into a 67 belvedere. Right now the car has a 318/727. 8 3/4 rear end 2.92 gears.
It's a toy. Some playing, some driving around. I don't need 700hp.
Saw this after my reply plan on a 4barrel intake and carb... Cam and spring change along with timing chain and oil pump for sure.Oh sorry...383 is 2 barrel
Well the springs would be changed anyway as one does not put a stock camshaft back into an engineThanks for the info. She runs like a scolded dog actually. No clue why. As far as I can see it's bone stock except it was converted from points and the exhaust rusted halfway so it's straight piped. Is the 318 running good in the car now?
That's what I'm starting to see. And I have found a guy selling some goodies for the 318 locally. For the money you’re going to sink into that 383 after your initial $1500 investment, you could build that 318. Heads cam intake exhaust put this 318 at 388 lb-ft of torque and 357 hp. in a Barracuda with 3:55 it went 12.76-second e.t. with a trap speed of 103.02 mph. On the street, the engine is deceptively docile and idles well at 750 rpm.

Parts will probably be less expensive too. That's what I'm starting to see. And I have found a guy selling some goodies for the 318 locally.
I see alot more used parts for big blocks vs small blocks.Parts will probably be less expensive too.
Big blocks are more popular, but I bet you can find everything you need for that 318.I see alot more used parts for big blocks vs small blocks.
There are lots of differences between a 2 and 4 barrel stock 383 engine besides intake and carb. The Pistons, camshaft, valve springs, oil pan and exhaust manifolds are different between the 2.Any difference between heads or internals on the 2 barrel vs 4?
Oh wow, ok.There are lots of differences between a 2 and 4 barrel stock 383 engine besides intake and carb. The Pistons, camshaft, valve springs, oil pan and exhaust manifolds are different between the 2.
