Ok guys, long story short, it's been a while sense I been on the site cuz of my new job. Some of u might know that I have a 66 Plymouth Satellite 2 door project that I'm working on. That had no motor. And also I couldn't decide to go with a 318 or 383. At the end I decided to go with a 383 n FOUND ONE!!! A couple weeks I bought it for $350 with a 727 trans. It was a great deal so I jumped into it quick. Now the motor is sitting in my yard. It's a 2bbl.....I've heard there was a differrence between the 2bbl and 4bbl and that the 4bbp had more horsepower. Again I'm just saying what I've been told. So IF it is true what they are saying, what's the best suggestion you guys have so that I can convert my 2bbl to a 4bbl but even better and much higher horsepower so I won't go back again. Thanks

Cam,carb, and intake.HP manifolds or headers.I had a 383 2 bbl Fury I added a intake and 4bbl and that was it.I swore it ran as good as my 70 383 Road Runner.

The above suggestions are good, If you change the cam, remember two barrel engines had 9.2:1 compression, and the torque converter stall speed on a two barrel was around 1500-1700. Some years ago I put in a mopar purple shaft HP cam in my 383, and didn't change the torque converter stall from the two barrel.(oops) It is a little sluggish at the low end, because the HP cam likes to spin up to 22-2400 right away, which is why HP engines have a higher stall speed from the factory than a two barrel engine. The cam was a good Idea, but follow up further back. Installing 3:23 ratio helped out some, but nevertheless in my case I'll be removing the trans again to correct my mistake!

very true, 66 thru 69 two barrel engines were 9:2, with the 66-67 at 270. 66 was phasing out the 361 @265 horse, so I believe the 270HP 383 was going to replace it. They were kinda doggey, at least in my Polara, and the 68 - 69 was 290, but ran better . then they headed towards 8:5. The best engine I had was a 65 383 two barrel from a police car that was 10:1. and 305 Hp. And all the real four barrel engines 60' thru 67
were 10.1:1 and 325HP or so as well. Great engines too!

Thank you for the link. Since I'm old I focus on 1959-1969. All 383 engines from 1959 thru 1964 were 10.0:1 regardless of two or four barrel. I meant to say 64' Plymouth police car, sorry. I stand corrected, actually the 65' 383 2bbl was reduced to 9.2, as Chrysler began to transition away from the 361, and replace it with the 383. In 66' the 361 and 383 2bbl were 9.2. In 67' the 361 is gone, and the 383 still 9.2 thru 69'. These figures are per the factory Chrysler service manuals. Then By 70' I was gone,(Military) and cars were the last thing on my mind! I don't think I have a 70' service manual, as they are two new for me!LoL

...and by "early", I meant 66-67.

Thanks for the info on pre-66.

I should know better.

Just a quick note here. I converted my 67 383 2bbl to 4bbl some years ago. After doing some looking up part numbers etc, I found the cam was the same 2 or 4. This is a 67 now, I can't speak for other years. I siply put a 4bbl intake and AFB on it and it runs GREAT!
Keep in mind that in a Charger in 66 there was no 2bbl 383, only 4. The last year for 361 was the big block 2bbl in 66. In a Charger I'm saying.
But I see in the parts 66 book it lists one for 2bbl and another for 4bbl.
2bbl - 2268405 (same as 361) 4bbl - 2532190.
In 67 only 1 camshaft 2532190.

IIRC, that was any B body.

It seems Chrysler got the 383-2 a year before everyone else, just like the 440, and 360.

General note on camshafts for the era from the Mopar performance engine book......most 66-67 383's, all 383-2 bbl, 400-2bbl standard 400-4bbl and 440-4bbl used a 256 degree cam...

the 68-76 383 and 440 -4 bbl HP and 67-76 440 HP used a different cam with 276 duration..

Thank you all!!!! Sounds like if I just put a 4bbl carb and intake I should be good. But don't I have to change out the cam too??
I should've mentioned this earlier, but the motor and trans came off a 66 plymouth fury...so what exactly am I looking at here???
I plan rebuilding the motor anyways so if any suggestions please do let me know.
Thanks again

I suggest you Put it together and have fun,as best you can. In the 60's 94 octane was regular, and premium was 98-102, so today you can throw all the rules out the window . All these numbers don't mean much,. Gas was pink back then, and smelled good!
