Can it be done?

Is it possible to take a pair factory AFBs from say, 383 or 440 cars and make them work? I'm not a numbers guy and would prefer a set of real Carters on an engine vs. the new stuff. Not mention, have you priced new carbs lately?

The reason I ask it because I have a 66 383 that needs a carb right now... and I'm wondering if I can just snag a carb for it, pick up a second, and reuse both of them later?

Now, I do have a question for the numbers guys. What number carbs should I be looking for?

Thanks.

you need an AFB #4130S for a manual, or a 4131s Auto: Or, A 4132S manual, or 4133S Auto with the calif clean air pkg.
The hemi carb# 4139S, same front and back.
440 V8-4136S or 4137S. I believe this carb is too big for the 383, however. I can look tomorrow to be sure.

383 and 440's of the late 60's had AVS carbs. A 66 383 had an AFB but a strange model with no velocity valves. Hemi's used AFB's with velocity valves and the exact carb number depends on what year hemi you have. The front and rear carbs on a hemi are not the same and they are set up as a progressive arrangement, with the rear carb as the primary and one of the few with a unique choke. The AFB's and AVS carbs from the 383 and 440 used the divorced choke and adding the hemi choke to those will require some monkeying around - but it is possible. Also the 66 383 and the hemi should both have the narrow bolt pattern, which is not true for the later 60's stuff.

I was going by my parts book, showing the carb numbersto be the same, although I was thinking the linkage was different. The 66 is the narrow pattern, but the 66' 440 carb has larger front barrels, and won't work on a 66 383 Intake. if you go to the newer style, then everything has to change to the newer.Intake, Carb, air cleaner, linkage for the choke, etc.
