I finally got to the 68 Charger that has sat for 12 years. It has seats but no interiro, a transmission but no engine, and lots of rust but fixable. I knew I was in trouble when I got out the title and all other paperwork and the VIN started with SP29G8B... Yes, I know it should start with XP. I looked at the VIN and the factory rivets were punched over the first two letters, XP, and someone at the dealer? DMV? wrote SP. I looked at the fender tag and it reads XP29 62 5 43. That led to a question about what version of 383 came in this car?
According to My Dodge Charger/Road Runner/Super Bee Restoration Guide, the G in the 68 VIN emant 383 2bl or 383 4 bl (330hp). The same book states that the 62 after the XP29 in the fender tag means 383 4bl.

Year one states that the G code in the 68 VIN meands 383 2bl or 318 2b.
My Mopar Big block rebuilding book says the G code in the VIN meant 383 for 1964-1966 and 318 in 1968.

None of these agree with each other. I believe it is a 383 4 bl car based on the VIN and fender tag. Am I right?

1966

F-361
G-383 (all 4 bbl in B bodies)

1967

G- 383 2 bbl
H- 383 4 bbl

1968

Same as 67

I don't believe "G" became 318 until 1970 or after.

Good luck getting the title straigtened out.
I understand that is a pain to do.
Obviously it's an error in record, not manufacturing, so might be less of a pain.

Get a letter from Chrysler, Hamtramck Historical, Galen, etc if you have to, and pick up the FSM (factory service manual) for 1969 Coronet/Charger.

I had the same thing happen with me when i went to change the title into my name. All i did was take the title to the courthouse and tell them it was the wrong letter in the vin.You may have to take a digital photo and bring it with you to back you up,but if they see all the other numbers and letters are the same it should'nt be a problem.

Thanks everyone

I find it frustrating to find information at variance from different books. I am still confused by the Fender tag #62 which, according to my restoration book means 383 4 bl but the VIN has the G code for the 2 bl. Does it really matter? Naw. I'm planning on putting a stroked 383 (440 Source says it will come out to 438 cubes), put the 383 pie tin on the carb, and enjoy. The car does have dual exhaust. The tips turn out at the back not like the R/T versioins. Does this make sense? It has a chrome console, electric windows, and Ac.

Start by checking the tag against the body to see if the tag came with the car. The Sales Order Number is the last six digits on the bottom row of the tag.

Check them against the numbers on the radiator support. You should find B8x****** or G8X****** with the * being the same number that is on the fender tag.

If the numbers do not match, then the tag doesn't go with the car. If it does match then there is your answer.

That restoration guide is so full of bad and misinformation it is worthless. Code 62 in 68 means 383-4bbl

Thanks for the help. The tag matches in every way even the exact same GG1 Green. My conclusion is it was the 330 hp 4 bl car. This has been a great help.
