I picked up a 64 Dodge Polara 500 last fall. I've known the car since my uncle owned it in the 80s. He lost it in 84 and it sat in the bush untill I put it on my trailer and brought it home. I was told by the owner and by my uncle that it has a 68 or 69 383 Mag but the numbers I could find are very confusing. The casting number on the drivers side of the block above the starter is 2128854-1 and below that is LL. From what I can tell this means it is a 64 361 or 383 block? The numbers on the pad next to the distributor throw me even more. VV HP- and below that is 30155C. Now I thought the HP stamp was only givin to the Magnum engines and only after 67. I'm lost can anyone shed some light on this decoding disaster? Thanks for any help.

some engines were stamped HP before the late sixties. You don't see a 383 or 361 stamped on the pad under the Distributer? There should also be a date on the opposite side of the engine as well. That number is a 64' block.

Is the engine out of the car? the 10,000 day code should be on the back. My 65' has the engine size as part of the series of numbers.

No there is no cid stamp anywhere I could find. The only numbers on the pad are VV HP- 30155C.

I have a 64 383 that has the HP on the pad below the distributor.See attached photo photo (2).JPG

Very good, as anyone can see, HP stamps were utilized prior to the 68' model year. 64's were some beautiful cars!
thanks 66satellite!

The engine is still in the car I was planning on getting the old girl running before I started tearing anything apart. 66satellite your stamping is laid out just like all the other ones I've seen while trying to figure this out. Mine is laid out different. I can't post pics on here but follow the link and you'll see what I mean. What did the HP stand for in 64?

The "HP" is for High Performance. "V" is for 1964. Yours certainly is different. the "VV" could just be that it was double stamped and the "C" could be for a special crank and pistons but I don't know for sure.
