383 stroker idea need insight

Hi im looking to do a stroker 383 chrysler big block and plan to use a stock factory fordged 440 crank shaft as a stroker crankshaft. has anyone ever tried this and will the block need to be machined to fit the crank if it works?
 
You machine the crank to fit the block. Forged cranks are strong and will handle it fine. If you machine the block for the crank, you weaken the block a little.
 
Yeah you'll end up with a 438 or something like that. Scroll down in the link below and you'll see that combination and the exact pistons and rings you'll need. That thing will scream!

Buy the whole stroker kit with the crank from 440 source no clearence to grind for the counter weights, and sell the 440 crank u have, I have a 3.75 stroke crank in my 383, contact Scott Brown for the cam, I have alot of info for your build if you need it.
 
Sounds like a good idea to me, especially if you already have a 383 block. A 400 block has a 4.340 stock bore size, and a 383 is 4.25". So your .090" smaller with the 383. Use what you got is my motto, unless you have a big budget. If you go with stock bore size, 3.75" stroke makes 426 cubes in a low deck engine. Same as a hemi. I went with a 400 block at .035 O.S. for a 451 also works well.

When you turn down the 440 crank main journal to 383 size, that crank/rods will also fit in a 400 block. The pistons would be different.
 
Re: mod the 383. My opinion is that if you want to stroke it, start with a 400 block. They are a dime-a-dozen, and you will end-up with a much sturdier base.

If you have a good crnak man in your area, this is how we did strokers long before they made bolt in stuff.

I have welded up and changed the stroke on factory cranks and they then seen more the 6500rpm and more than 800 hp in some cases, none broke. Now ask me that question about a aftermarket crank.......
