68 Coronet. Converting to a 4 speed. I have to buy all the bolts for flywheel, clutch, bellhousing, and starter. What was the reason for the stud and bolt configuration for the starter? For the stud to orient the starter and make it easier to get the bolt started? Can I just use 2 bolts instead? It is a smaller lightweight starter, so if there is a problem down the road, it should be easier to remove/replace compared to an OEM starter.

MO it's easier to install with a stud there. A plus is less chance of cross thread. If it's easier to use two bolts why not. The nose of the starter locates it. Just don't fully tight either bolt until you only have a couple turns to go on both bolts.

I believe studs kept the shims from falling off when changing the starter.
