Well, I appreciate all the comments, but have seen many of the 230 and 630 blocks the last few years, and know the 440 Source site very well. I was searching for clews on the date code. I don't know if it's a 1 or a 10. Doesn't seem like the stamper on the line would have missed that, but ya never know. The block I'm looking at is a was takin from standard bore to .040 over block which gives me another .020 to go if I wish to go further. As you can see by my pictures, this is a pretty straight block and has the main caps to boot. Just in the last six months or so I've been seeing "230" blocks going for $200-$1000 depending on the condition. I was hoping some of you might have had some up close and personal experience with an early 1971 run of the 400 motor. Good luck. And if you search and search for that illusive "230" block for awhile with no solid offers, $500 starts to look pretty good.
Is this "230" number your talking about on the side of the block? I have one and you have my curiosity up over these as this is the first time ive heard anyone talk of these. I payed 150 bucks from a Chevy guy who said he didn't have any use for a Mopar engine.. I have the numbers somewhere if it helps clarify..
Not all "3614230" casting 400 blocks were thick main web. Only a specific number were built for early-mid 1972 cars. The 3614230 casting blocks after the month of october 1971 were re-cast into less "beefier" main webbing blocks and are pretty much the kind you find around today (though they casting numbers may be different, the casting design is the similar). The thick main web blocks were casted from July-October 1971 and then were stopped because it cost too much money in the long run to keep that much metal in the block. Hence, the desireability of the block now.
There are 2 different 230 blocks: One large font and one small font. The small font is initially more desirable.
I would never pay big money for a 230 block unless it has already been cleaned/tanked, magnafluxed and sonic checked. Otherwise you could pay $500 for a block that needs 4 sleeves @ $100 ea. or is cracked.
IMO, $500-$600 for a small font 230 block that has had the work done and the paperwork as proof is fair.
I did alot of research on my 230 block that came in my 72 satty and found what everyone has said it is the strongest wedge block . The car was built 11/71. I got lucky and I did build a 451, all from 440 source I wanted 10.5 comp. for the street thats why I didn't go to a 470. IT IS AWSOME and I couldn't be happier! GOOD LUCK!! HOWARD
