do a mild 383. decent millage if you keep out of it. plenty of power, when you want it.

What do you have now? If you have a BB then it makes sense to use it because you already have the accessory brackets and drive train.

how much does a 383 cost to rebuild? and how much is decent?

They cost more than Chevys but it's a common engine so parts are easily available. I had a 383 in my 68 RR and it ran mid 13's but it didn't get 15 MPG - probably because I had my foot in it all the time.

If you want gas mileage AND performance you don't want an OLD muscle car (because the two don't co-exist in this universe) you want a NEW muscle car.

Boy aint that the truth. The best one can do is put an aftermarket fuel injection on it but those are pricey if you buy them new.

I was thinking the same thing as well...

ok i dont have any motor but it was a slant 6 auto and i have a 360 4 spd and im gonna go with a stock rebuild on that, i have a 78 swb 4x4 with a 318 and it gets 16 mpg and it weighs more than my car. so i dont think its a wild idea to ask for more than 10 miles a gallon i got an 8 3/4 and the sb 4spd and i was thinking 3.55 for gears or 3.91s it doesnt have to run 120 mph cause the car will get enough attention by itself lol so a mild 360 will be a good idea i think

Well, I can tell you that I have a 78 LRT that I converted to 4X4 with a 400 h.p. 440 and it only gets 8 mpg on a good day.

yeah i still wanna see pics of your lre man. i have a 78 macho power wagon with a 318 and i get 15 mpg

If you put gears in it like 355's or 391's you are not gonna get the mpg that you want. You are not gonna get both,so you're gonna have to pick one. You can have power or gas mileage not both. Sorry to burst your bubble, just trying to be honest.

I've got a 300 or so horse small block with 2.75's that gets 23 MPG if I drive it right. 10 Mpg i I drive it hard. I've got a big block in a b body with 3.55's that gets 15 MPG if I drive it like a grandma, and stay off the interstate, or 6 MPG If I pull the front wheels when I take off and drive it like an *** hole.

A 78 era TRUCK is a whole other animal. They have the areo dynamics of a brick.

BTW, my 78 LRT has 3.55 gears in it. The 8 mpg are around town, on the highway, beating on it or taking it easy. It seems to make little difference. The truck weighs 4800 lbs. Hard to believe but I had it weighed at a gravel pit and that was with 1/2 tank of gas and no one in it.

Here is a link to pictures of it.

ok so i found out i have an od trans and at 60 mph with 26 inch tires and 3.91s ill spin 2175 rpms which should equal 14 to 15 mpgs as 2.75s will take forever to take off id rather have 3.23s, but im gonna see wat my 8 3/4 gears are first and see wat they do.
