I've recently acquired a 65 Belvedere II 426 street wedge car. The seller was very confident that it had the original motor. The car has a build date of November 12 1964. In looking at the engine stamp pad it reads, V 42 1 3. That would mean a engine build date of January 3 64.

I was curious if the early car engine blocks would have been stamped with the model year or the actual year of production? And if it was stamped with year of production is it possible for the engine to be built so far ahead of the car?
Thanks
Mongo

V series is 1964 model year. The letters started over with A for the 1965 model year.

Got it. So all the 65 cars would have had an A engine stamp even if they were manufactured in 64?

Got block cleaned up a little better and got casting date of 11 7 63. I would think that would be right for a build date in January of 64.

The date stamped on the pad is the date the engine was assembled.

Is it possible then that an engine assembled in January would have sat around until it got installed in a November car?

Something doesn't make sense. Either you have a '64 engine in your '65 or something else is mis-matched. Does the car have a fender tag? Are you sure it is a street wedge car? There wasn't a street wedge in '64 was there? So a V42 might be a Max Wedge block? Hard to tell you what is going on without seeing some pictures.

I have a B42 block sitting in my shop so maybe V42 blocks also exist but I don't think the 426 street wedge was listed as an option in '64 and Mopar would not have put a '64 engine into a '65 so someone else swapped it in there or re-stamped it.

Post a picture of the fender tag. If your car is an original street wedge car then it has the wrong engine in it. If it isn't a street wedge car then you have even more issues to discuss with seller.........

'64 was the first year for the street wedge 426 in the b-body.

On the pad is there also a stamping H.P..
lewtot184 is correct on the street wedge introduction.
Could very well have been a leftover assembled engine.

I have a 65 streetwedge belvedere 1. 64 blocks stamped the engines with v for 64 & first two numbers of engine cu in. V42 for 426. 65 used A for year and all three numbers for cu in. A426. My engine was cast on 3-23-64. My fender tag date says 315. On the pad you can see that it was stamped A413 and 26 was stamped right over the 13. I don’t remember right off hand the engine build date on pad but it is early March.

Andy, I have an early 64 bel that is a 426 street wedge (feb) fender tag says so, so yes they were made in 64. Dave.
