I am trying to get some comparitive information. My RR has a mild 440 and a 727. At WOT it shifts from 1st to 2nd at about 4600rpm. The 2nd to 3rd shift is the same or maybe even a few hundred rpm less. I have an aftermarket tach. I checked the tach by using a seperate optical laser tach with a little piece of reflective tape on the harmonic balancer. The aftermarket tach appears to be spot on. If I put the trans in 2nd and let it wind out at WOT it seems to pull strongly up to redline at 5500rpm. Other than the WOT shift points the trans seems to work normally.

I also have a 06 4.7L Grand Cherokee automatic. At WOT it shifts all gears right about at redline.

Can any of you guys with a similar 440/727 combination confirm your WOT shift rpms? Thanks!!!!

your trans kickdown rod is adjustable, make the shift points what you want.

RR vs. 06 jeep comparison is apples and oranges. The jeep will shift when the computer tells it to. RR will shift where the kickdown rod is set, adjust that where you want to shift but your shift points seem about right.

shift rpm with a stock governor is 4600rpm. the 440 magnums were rated 375hp@4700rpm. so, a stocker really doesn't need much over 4600rpm. my stock 440 doesn't like anything over 5000rpm. just because something may rev higher doesn't mean it's making any power at the higher rpm's.

Thanks for the info guys. I guess the shift points are not the cheap and simple fix I was hoping for.

OK, so maybe "The addiction has started. Be prepared to keep throwing $$$ at it. It won't stop." and "Amen to that...LOL..." was right after all....

I think I better get this thing repainted. Black. Like the black hole it is.

A&A transmission makes governors for all sorts of shift points. I have a 5800 rpm governor in my Charger that is spot on. Changing the governor can be done in the car with only a (partial) fluid change and tail shaft gasket. Governors *may* change the low throttle position shift points too though- they shouldn't- but they can.

The kickdown can only adjust within the limits of the governor.

The trans shop told me the right way to do it was to change the governor. But the more I think about the more I can see that everything needs to be optomized to work together - engine, breathing, axle and trans.
