About a year ago I decided I wanted a little more power in my coronet so I found a used motor with aluminum heads and solid mechanical cam for $2500. Turned out to be a mistake.
So I bit the bullit and started from scratch on my first engine build. Here goes. Tear down was pretty sraightfoward. Had the block dcked and bored to .060 over. PAinted it and began looking into buuilding the short-block.
I picked up a 500" stroker kit from Mancini that had an eagle crank and rods and Diamond pistons and a lunati hyd roller cam. (.535/.550 lift and 231/239 @.50 duration) 1.5 comp magnum rockers. Thought about putting it together myself, but the more I researched it, the easier the decision became to let the guy do the short block. So I packed it up in the Pilot and dropped it off.
Wow beautiful motor love your build, I think you will get 10-11's @115 I have a similar kit in mine 493 with the eagle crank and diamond pistons and the 1.5 would be very interested to see what you come up with? Love all that polished aluminium nice job on that it all looks brand new.
Thanks. I actually got to check the compression and test drive it in a 69 satellite. It seemed tight but looks like it was a time bomb. The guy gave me 500 back and I salvaged the block, heads and water pump, plus put the demon 750 carb and dominator intake on my old moter which I sold for $1500. So I didn't get to beat up. But definately a lesson learned.
Sounds like a nice build. I would also bet easy mid 11's with the gear and cam you have. You could easily use more cam and more gear to run easy 10's. Ron
I was afraid I was alittle conservative with the cam. It's not gonna see much track time since there's nothing close to me. And I may want to take take an hour or 2 cruise. but I still want to kick some aas if I have to. lol. So where do you think I went wrong with the cam? I know more cu inch will tame a cam, but what could I have gotten away with and still enjoyed a reliable street motor?
I'm using the mp.590" camshaft with 1.6 ratio rockers giving .630" lift @ valve. I have a lot of compression though..... It's about as much as I would go on the street....
I was afraid of the comp magnum roller rockers not handling the spring pressure. Maybe down the road I'll swap the rockers and cam out for something nastier.
