I am doing the engine in my 77 Monaco cop car. It is a 440. I have installed icon 968 pistons 40 over. the engine builder says I should get some 88cc heads Its going to have a 323 rear gear and a TCI sizzler torque converter with about a 1900 stall speed. I need some suggestion as to the heads, cam, valve train, intake and carb. Next year will be a 3" exhaust. I may have to stay with the TQ and performer manifold on it for now due to finances. Thanks Phil

blueprint you're build then choose converter... 2200 to 2500 range 1900 sounds like a motor home with a 4500 red line...

Edelbrock rpm package with all the recommended kit for it.... and hughs converter and its one stop. Check their work because I had valve stem seals that were not seated all the way

Big heavy car with 3.23 gears calls for focus on low RPM. This is a super cheap and effective build. Mild cam, meaning low overlap (112 - 114 LSA), about 268 duration and .450"-ish lift, stock iron heads with a quality rework, 9:1 CR (don't know what 968 pistons are), headers are always good for freeing up some power and in your case I'd go with 1 7/8" tubes. Performance curve in the distributor. TQ on the factory iron intake will work just fine, or I can say with certainty the iron intake will not hold you back. Note that the cam choice will be the heart of this build so choose wisely. It won't take much cam to make a big difference.

For what it's worth, I'm running a low compression 413 that someone put a comp XE268H in and the cam sounds great and really wakes the motor up. I'm running a RPM intake, stock 906 heads, headers and 750 Holley vac secondaries with a 727. The car is a hoot to drive and really pulls hard off the line to 5000 rpm. I found it likes a bit more timing, as it runs best at 20* initial.

Yea there you go 413! I like the 20 degrees initial, 38 total advance too. Gets you tons of low end torque. I never would have believed it if I hadn't tried it! But to pass an emissions test you need about 5 deg initial, and screw in the idle speed screw, to raise the RPM back up.

No emission tests here for pre OBDII cars in Massachusetts. We are getting closer. Block done. Stayed with the stock heads. The same shop is doing them over. They want to stay with the 88cc heads. The stealth heads were too tight.

I would jump that rear gear up and let her breath !!

Thats great power, dont get me wrong, but i have a 340 thats nothing wild with its .528 cam and headers thats putting out 392hp with 100cid less than that 440. I think you could have done more with that 6 grand.

the amount of cid has VERY LITTLE to do with how much HP an engine makes,it is all about how much air the engine can pump in & out.

nice build on the 440 Phil!!! awesome!!

you've got 6 pack equivalent pistons
if you get heads with closed combustion chambers to get some quench your compression will be way up there in the 11:1 range- is that what you are looking for?
cam, if hyd check out Howards, Engle, Crower, Ultradyne for .904 lifter grinds there are also some comps in their purple shaft series but most comps are chevy grinds nothing wrong with tq
I've D Dished 6 pack pistons to get the compression down with closed chamber heads
what fuel?

You're preaching to the choir.lol

Point made, if it had the ability to breathe better...it had made much more power with all that cid.

Put the money in the heads~
