HI,
I have a 440 HP block (fresh .30 over bore), and I am thinking of rebuilding it on a labor trade. it has the six pak type rods, but the damper looks a bit worn. Is there another way to balance? I can't seem to find a new damper. any help would be greatly appreciated.......
 
You would need to have mallory metal added to the crank and that could get pretty expensive. Or you might look into an aftermarket damper that allows the addition of some offset weight.
 
Oh, and I think the proper terminology is "a 440 CI plant". As told in the Blues Bros! Haha!
 
I had a guy tell me just balance it, but I just ain't sure. Those motors are a bit odd to me (it is not balanced like a 440 Magnum, even though it has a steel crank, it's the rods) 440 source has 1 or 2 , but they are used. and a bit expensive. Would a fluid damper work?
 
No, a harmonic absorber is designed to deal with the torsional vibrations from the crank whether it's rubber or fluid type. It has nothing to do with balancing the engine unless there is an offset weight incorporated in the design. It may be possible to get a steel crank absorber (damper) and drill holes 180 deg from where the offset weight would be. If doing that I wouldn't drill on the outer ring but rather on the hub if there is enough material. Summit has a pretty inexpensive absorber that allows the addition of an offset weight.

What Meep is referring to is balancing, like you were told to do. But because you have the heavier 6 pack rods, balancing can't be done by grinding metal from the crank counterweights. You have to ADD weight, which can be expensive. I don't know how much work you have planned, but ditching the 6 pack rods for some lighter weight rods might be easier and cheaper. Not to mention your whole reciprocating assembly will end up lighter.
 
Dang...I don't think there is a damper out there new... and I am not able to put much $ in it, although, I like the lower recipe weight. Better for killing off brand junk....
 
The block is a bit better, but i liked the thought of the HD rods, and if i sold the XLCR, i could get the 6 pak induction...
 
I have a fairly radical 340 in my 66 sat, but it don't move the earth like a big block.

Its got cop tires, cop suspension, cop shocks, it was a model made before catalytic convertors so it'll run good on regular gas. Cigarette lighter needs some work, however.
