I am a dreamer like every American should be. My best friend is turning 21 next year and me and him wanted to plan out a trip starting at Indiana going through the southern States to Florida and then going west to San Diego. We wanted to stop at Vegas and El paso all of the neat places in the United States. We wanted to stop at bars on the way. Just wanting to know if a blown Charger would be able to go across the country if we drove it good and changed the oil a couple of times on the trip. We wouldnt be driving a lot in one day either. Is it possible? Have you guys ever embarked on a long tour like that? Could you guys tell me some stories on the distances you guys have went? I do have a big 460 truck should I just put the charger on the trailer and when I get to a town or city I like. Unload the charger at the hotel and Cruise around a little bit? Just wanting to know your guys opinions. This will be a fun thread and any suggestions on good places to go definitely ad them in there.

I say go for it (I love road tripping in my 78 Cordoba) But it's always good to set some ''just in case'' money aside in case something breaks. Also if you like driving late at night make sure your route has some 24hr gas stations ;) I personally wouldn't pull the car, one more vehicle (+ trailer) to worry about plus cruising down the highway in your pride and joy with the window down and stereo blasting is what i's all about!

IMHFO if you do go, nut & bolt the whole car before you leave... Also your going to spend a small fortune on fuel & hotels/food costs, prices have gone way up recently... I've traveled all over the USA racing for 35+ years & took a cool trip with some other car guys, I've been from NorCal to LA from LA to Chicago, on historic Route 66, then back thru the Dakotas, Montana, Idaho, Washington & back down I-5 thru Oregon to Calif. thousands & thousands of freaken' miles, back to the Sacramento area, Rancho Murieta where I was living at the time... It was freaken'great...{fuel was only $1.00 a gal. back then too, I still spent like $5k on food, hotels & fuel, for 2 weeks, you can probably at least double that figure now, especially with 2 people, in a Blown 440 Charger, coast to coast & back}...LOL... I suggest you bring extra cash for all the places that won't take credit cards {you'd be surprised how many don't or won't} & credit-cards with high enough limits, bring a small ice cooler for some cheap type food {bread, lunch meat, crakers, water, sodas or tea etc.}, bring plenty of music, bring jackets, sleeping bags & blankets {it gets cold at night, where you don't think it will}, bring a spare & bring a jack, bring some tools that you know you will need, bring extra special parts, extra ignition box, extra plugs & wires, extra cap & rotor, maybe a small electrical repair kit, extra hoses & belts, fitting, clamps, fuel additive with water separation like Stabil {& use it}, a spare 2 gal. fuel can & funnel, trans fluid & oils, {Fuel can be horrible in some places, try to use reputable stations}... Also I highly suggest that you get AAA emergency roadside service before you leave for unforeseen emergencies... good luck it's a great experience, if you can deal with the typical issues along the way, you may not have any if the car is set-up correctly, but I wouldn't count on that & be prepared for the worst...

IMO it depends on the Charger's rear end gearing, your cooling system, what the minimum octane gas the car will run on and the speed you plan to drive. High gear ratio = high rpm = hot motor = bad things happening to a nice car. Also, driving over the Rocky mountains puts a SERIOUS strain on your cooling system. Also, you can't get 93 octane a lot of places.

SOME QUICK MATH FOR YA USING MY 440 AS AN EXAMPLE.......this is just for gasoline

tpods 440 gets 4.5 MPG
from Pittsburgh to the pacific ocean is im guessing 2500 miles

2500 divided by 4.5 =555.56 gallons of gas just to get there
to get home is the same @ 555.56
total of 1111.12 gallons of gas there and back
average price per gallon of 93 octane is 4.10
4.10 x 1111.12= 4555.60
thats $4555.60...dollars JUST IN GASOLINE ! thats not counting food....beer....souveniers.....stops at the brothels, hotels,motels,campgrounds, yadda yadda

there ya go.......if you can afford that and trust this car...GO FOR IT......i did dumb things too when i was 21 years old....what a great experience:headbang: !

"1983" left home (indiana) thanksgiving day with an old cheby truck and and my bike in tow (1980 harley). headed for Oregon (Willamette valley) made it after 2 weeks, 4 breakdowns and countless close encounters in roadside bars. Times have changed. the world is a different place. You'd better be great mechanic and know your machine very well and trust her. a couple of oil changes wont get it. oh and you should probably brush up on a little self defense if you're really driving a blown charger everyone is gonna notice from "kids to kops" I assume it's a late model Charger? Hmmm, not quite that simple. E85 stations are few and far between, and unless your engine is built to run exclusively on alcohol you will burn twice as much of the stuff, negating the benefits of the lower price per gallon. Sounds like a fun trip though. About 20 years ago or so Hot Rod magazine did an article on detroits car scene. I was still in high school, and me and my best friend were all about cars. We saw that story and it was Detroit or bust. We wanted to go sooo bad. We never made it sadly. Graduation, then basically life happened. Now we are pushing 40, he has 2 kids and i have one on the way. I dont even know if its the same there anymore. I would still like to go to detroit but would be sad to know that the image i have in my head of what its like and the reality of the place dont match. Which im sure they do not.

Damn lol you guys make it seem like I am going to SouthCentral Los Angeles or something. I doubt anybody would rob me anyways. I do own a sks but California wont allow that **** there lol. As for the E85 thing I am going to have tw0 five gallon gas cans in the trunk so that would be 25 tank and 10 in the trunk that would get me far. From my understanding they make pretuned carbeurators for E85 these days. It burns colder and does have more octane than 93. So it would get better miles to the gal.

I'm just amazed that a 21 year old had the money for a Charger, Blown or otherwise. Go for it. I hope you have tall gears. Personally I hate being in the slow lane going 50 mph while all these new cars zip past at 80 mph.
