I have a chance to purchase a '71 440 (no trans) from a New Yorker for $550 or a 413 + trans from a '65 car (Imperial I think) for $700. These would be for a '65 Belvedere II with the original, tired, 273. I'm kind of thinking about buying both.
I know the 440 puts out a little more horse, but the 413 would be period correct (if that matters).
I am assuming both may need to be gone through, but the 440 is more likely to be in better shape. The guy with the 440 is an old (1950's-60's) drag car builder (Ted Ingersoll who built "Pure Hell") and I don't think he would sell me crap. The guy with the 413 is an acquaintance of my cousin and know that he bought the Imperial? complete for a Mopar project that fell through.

So? What do you think?

440 or 413?

I would buy the 440 and dress it up like a 413. If you have to bore the block at some point pistons could be hard to find for the 413. Otherwise there's not much difference.

Your better off with the 440.That trans is most likley a pushbutton shifter style. What is YOUR vision for the build??

Neither one's original so what's the difference? The 440 has a much larger bore which offers less valve shrouding and improved breathing, 27 more cubic inches and much better piston availability should the need arise. Dress it up right and only the people who really REALLY know what they're looking at will be able to tell.

a '65 Belv II Big Block would have either a 383 or a 426 street wedge. Both would be painted turquoise with the 426 having chrome valve covers and air cleaner.

This is my 440 in a '65 Satellite. Not completely original looking but close enough for me. I might just go for chrome valve covers if these don't provide enough clearance for the roller rockers underneath them.

440 simply because of the larger bore. Larger bore engines just work better than small bore engines do even if they are the same cubic inches.....

As others have said more cubes and cheaper pistions with the 440.

I have to agree the 440 makes more power and its almost impossible to find 413 internal parts.

Soooo...... What you're sayin' is that the 413 is just as good as a 440??? :icon_thumright:

Kiddin', I hear what you're all saying. So, 440 here we go. Now if I can find a trans.

Thanks for the input!

440....like one other said,You can make it appear to be a 413...Good Luck

Do you want a pushbutton or floor shifter?Doin a trans is easy, just depends on what your building and what HP goals you have in mind.:pottytrain1:

engine choice

When I see the comment " internals are different on the 413" I have to wonder if speaker knows much for a discussion. Yes the pistons are but that is obvious and mentioned about 10 times so far. So what else is?
Anyone is going to change the cam etc, So what is the big deal.
You need to change the oil pan to a pre66 one anyhow.

Here is my thought The valve covers, timing cover, dampner, water pump housing will all be and look right like a 426. You do need a cable shift trans for the 65, and Oh by the way , they go for $300 plus for a core.
Even more of a thought, perhaps the 413 is a low miles engine you can just hone the walls and use the stock pistons and be a real cost saver. The stock 10:1 wont ping.
Also ,if 65 trans is used, get the Imperial driveshaft yoke.

Does your car have a column shifter? My Sat has a console and the original shifter used the 2 cable arrangement same as the pushbutton cars. I may be wrong but I think in '65 the column shifted cars were the same.

If you could locate a '65 (cable) trans then all the other gear will be a bolt-for-bolt affair. If you upgrade to the later '66 and up trans you'll need the conversion trans mount available from Shumacher. You can go with an aftermarket floor shifter to get the thing up and running quickly and easily.

Imperial Services makes a cable conversion setup for the console/floor shift cars and older pushbutton cars to swap in the later trans but I don't know if it will work with the column shifters.

I use the later transmission. I was able to mount a Hurst shifter inside the console and aside from the curve of the shifter stem in looks like it belongs there. I even mounted the factory shifter ball to the Hurst.

The 413 comes with a transmission. That would be my only reason for going that route. Otherwise, I'd stay with the 440.

It's gold and white and I plan on sticking with the colors. I want it to be streetable, but can jerk necks! Probably put the hemi scoop (shorter?) on it, black steels on back as wide as I can fit stock and maybe a torque thrust D look on the front.

I thought '64 was the last year of the push buttons? Mine is a column shift. If I could find them cheap enough, I would but the buckets and console in from a Satellite. I'll probably end up putting an after market floor shifter in it though.

So if I get the '71 440, what trans should I be looking for (year range) ?

Thanks again for the input!
