440 or 413? What would you get!

If you upgrade to the later '66 and up trans you'll need the conversion trans mount available from Shumacher. You can go with an aftermarket floor shifter to get the thing up and running quickly and easily.

This is probably what I'll look to do.

I'd would almost go with the 413/tranny combo...IF their running decently !!! both are very buidable, but if they're running you do a drop and go.. all for the same amount as a 440, and you STILL have to by a tranny to mate up to it...right ?

guess it comes down to your budget

Just an old new guy here( first post) but I will jump right in with my thoughts

Most replys have been right, but I am stubborn and will use my 413 police pursuit (clone) engine. I think all 413 are crank drilled for a manual transmission as well as the auto, and has a forged crank, internal balance. The 440 MiGHT have a cast crank with external balance. that crank is just fine, but the harmonic balancer is a dead give away that it is not 413 or 426. Sealed Power is the only off the shelf pistons for a 413, that I know of. That 413 can be bored to 426 max.
It's all a matter of personal choice...................MO

4Thirteen or 4Fourty

Here's an oddball combination; I have a 71 413 truck engine in my 68 Satellite :D . It is a 426 casting with thicker cylinder walls and I bought the engine with all truck stuff as a rebuilt unit with standard bore. I stripped it and bought a rotating assembly on Moparts for a 64 413 for about 600 USD. This included balancer, forged crank, 11" flywheel, rods, pistons (standard bore), new bearings, rings, and balancing of the rotating assembly. I put it into the 413 with a TRW TP-203 cam and Weiand hi-rise crossram 4bbl in front of an A-833. The 413 will be swapped out after next season for a 68 440, which is currently in my 64 wagon (yes, the 413 is going into the wagon)

If the 440 from the 71 NYer is the factory engine, it will have the forged crank. The 71 383/auto engine would be fitted with a cast crank. My experience is that some forged crank engines for automatic trans have a slightly smaller bore drilled in the crankshaft for the pilot bushing w.r.t. factory cranks drilled for manual transmission. The pilot bushing for a factory manual trans will not fit the bore in the forged crank from an automatic trans. application. However, pilot bushings with slightly smaller OD are available in the aftermarket circuit.
