A good deal is whatever you can find at the cheapest price and the closest to you....
I paid 600 for a complete "all brackets and pulleys fresh from car" 440 along with another 1967 440 complete long block. I ended up only using the 67 block and crank and sold everything else. Got a little more than half my money back!
Also think about what you want it to be once you get it all rebuilt. If your looking for a high performance build, then you can plan on using the heads for paper weights! So deduct that from the "value" you're bargaining. If your going to be building BIG power, then plan on tossing the cast iron crankshaft into a corner somewhere, to be replaced with a steel crank. What about a new balancer, intake, carb, 7qt oil pan, Now how good of a deal did you get??? Anyhow, just think about "down the road" when making a decision.
Me,,,, I would buy a bare block, or an older model one with a steel crank that requires light work and start from their.
Good luck!
