440 question**

I told a guy i would sell him a 440 i have hear, Its all tore down and i was told because of a spun bearing, have no idea which one.. I just want to know so im not telling him to much for it. Its out of a 75 New Yorker, according to the block numbers it very well could be, its all there except the valley pan and exhaust manifolds. The one i got it from said someone stole the bolts to all of it when it was sitting in his shed. I told the guy $225.00 for it.. Is this to much?, in the ball park? Im not going to ask for more if it is worth more just don't want to cheat him! Thats the only reason im asking, i figure you guys should know if its a ok price or not. if its to much ill drop it accordingly. Thanks.

If it had a spun main bearing, you might be selling him a boat anchor. If it was only a rod bearing, nothing a few new parts won't fix. If you don't know, then I would have a machine shop check the mains on the block.

Not sure of the 440 value, but just for comparison, I picked up a date coded 69 383 2bbl complete from carb to pan for $100. Has low compression in 2 cyls.
Check listings on craigslist in your area...you may find some useful comparisons there as well.

I think in my area 225 would be a steal for a engine that can be rebuilt. Around 400 is the average price for any 440 core around here although I have bought a few for less. I do think 225 is more than fair. Good Luck with your sale....Bill

Ron, I would think that $225 is a fair price for what you have described. Allow him to take it to a machine shop for a look at the bottom end.

If it's torn down, it should be fairly easy to see what bearing spun and just how bad then they can go from there but in my area, a 75 440 doesn't bring much. Cast crank (I'll use them but they are cheap), lousy heads and nothing special about the engine so basically, you're selling a block and rods and most don't want to use LY's anymore. Last 440 block I sold was for 150 and it was a 70 model.....rods go for about 50 so you are not out of reason at 225.

Going by these responses i think the best thing to do is, If he wants it then ill just tell him to take it and have it checked out, if there isn't a problem send me 200 bucks, now im sure its a fair deal!. Cant see how he could loose anything im not out to get rich on it, and im the only one who could loose but ive never in all my dealings here had a problem with anyone. i just didn't want to cheat him. Hey Ron here is a place that has a bunch of useful information about 440's. They seam to know their stuff but if you want a real shocker check out the prices of some of their blocks. Exactly. Any 440 round here STARTS @ $500.00 Runable/rebuildable.
It doesn't matter if your palnting flowers in it, or firing it up with that cast crank, Your selling a whole engine.

I paid $200 for my 68 block and it had noting in it, no oil gear bushing, good thing it had all the main caps and bearing end cap that was it.

$225 Ron a 75 block can be bored and redone just as easy as a 68.
