440 six pack connecting rods

i don't think so.
Fact is, The HD rod (2951906, commonly referred to as the “six-pack” rod) was first introduced in ’70 and used through ’75 on all steel crank HP 440 applications including some truck and motor homes. Only the ’70-71(a few ’72) six barrel/six-pack HP motors running the heavier high-compression pistons (10.5-10.2 CR) required external balancing. All other lower compression piston, HD rod, and steel crank 440s were internally balanced.

I agree with both sides of the fence. I guess what I'm trying to say is, there is nothing inherently WRONG with six pack rods. If you have um, run um.

wow, all good info. I get a free 440 from a freind of mine. It is a 1974 motor that was rebuilt about 20 years ago, but never bored. I am going to rebuild it and turn it into a 440 six pack. I do not plan on racing it. I am redoing the charger from the ground up and I wanted a 4 speed car, so 440+6 it's going to be. I am going to have someone else do it for me, he is real good with engines (over 30 years worth). Will I lite up the tires once in a while...hell yes. Will I take it on the track once or twice maybe, so in the end I just want a solid street motor.
Thanks for all of the comments.

Oh and if any of you six pack rod haters wanna send me some, I will gladly pm you my address.

I've been saying that for years and so far, no one has sent me any lol. I helped a buddy run a 69 roadrunner in Super Street in 82-83. The car was capable of running 10.70 and it was a 4 speed to boot! The thing even used the old TRW L2295 pistons and if you know anything about those, you know how heavy they are. Launch rpm was 6k and yes, 2nd gear came very quick to say the least. The rods were fine but a clutch failure is what killed it. Between a few freshen ups, the rods logged over 500 passes.....

They wouldda kept loggin races till somethin ELSE broke......hell, that's what they DID. lol You can lead a horse to water........

The main problem with the 'new and improved' rods for 1970 was that ChryCo used the same size rod bolts that the LY's had. The rod bolts are usually the weakest link to any decent rod and Chrysler used very good material in their rods.....but they dropped the ball on the bolts.

Rod bolts---yeah, bring's back old memories. Rebuilt over the winter, had the rods magnafluxed and brand-new ARP(?) bolts used and the following summer I put a rod thru the left side of the block. That was it for my racing days. But I lived on with my 2 sons and their(curses) Mustangs. Can't really complain though, I was regularly going to 6000rpm's on that engine.

The car that I mentioned earlier was shifted at 6800 and saw 7000 several times. Later on I got my own car going and it saw 7300 all the time.....it had Hemi rods in it. You can't do that with a stock oiling system tho. Even an engine that is only going to 6k should have some mods done to the oiling system too....

But take a set of six pack rods, put good ARP top of the line pro rod bolts in them have them magnafluxed, shot peened, resized balanced and bushed. Then what have you got?
