440 Six Pack

Hey guys, I'm sure this is a question that's been asked a million times, so forgive me if it has, but I got a 440 Six Pack that I'd like to part ways with but I'm not sure what to ask for it, or if I'd be better off selling it as is or rebuilding it first. I don't know much about this motor other than its got a Purple Cam and a six pack set up. 1970 date coded engine. Heads look like they are Max Wedge heads (518 casting number I believe with a '65 cast date). There are some Polk Perf. stamps in the heads too with a 10.90 under it which I'm guessing might be the compression ratio? Carbs need to be rebuilt and they are missing a few parts, but the linkage is all there. Are you talking about the carbs and the manifold or just the carbs?
 
so your saying the six pack manifold was taken out to match the max wedge heads? never heard of that before. that may hurt what the manifold would be worth. my 2cents
 
That I don't know. I have no idea if the motor was ran with the six pack manifold, or if it was just something that the guy i bought it from had laying around that he sold me with the motor. How different are the ports on the wedge versus stock heads?
 
Could that 518 number be 516 a head casting number used in 65.
 
If your interested in breaking it up I'd be interested in the carbs.
 
You're prob looking at 12 to $1500 for the six pack set up. I just bought a brand new in the box set up for $2500. Complete with all linkage and air cleaner. Remove the intake from the motor and look at the cyl head intake ports closely. If they are max wedge heads, the ports will be much larger on the heads, and the intake manifold ports wont match up. Something not quite right here. Double check the head casting numbers.

Took the rockers off to get a clearer look at the casting number. One shot it sort of looks like an 8 and then the other looks like it could be a 6. Here is a couple pictures of it. Last picture is a shot of the intake port.
 
Upon further investigation and thanks to an article done by Hot Rod, it appears as though amidst a lack of knowledge and being admittedly green to the hobby, I've mistaken the heads to be Max Wedges. Still not quite sure what they are, but I now know the Max Wedges lack a heat crossover passage which these heads have. Are the 516 heads good heads? I mostly only read about the 906 and 452 heads on here.
 
The 516 heads are a closed chamber design, which I like. They also have 1.60 exhaust valves, that I don't like. Another drawback to these heads is that the intake port flows less air in stock form, compared to the 915 and 906 heads. They came on the 1965 and 66 383 engines, as well as others. In 67 the 915 head was introduced, where the intake port was re contoured and flow was improved, and the ex valves were enlarged to 1.74" diam. Some of the 67 915 heads had 1.60 ex valves. You can make good power with the 516 head, with the right modifications. There are some threads here, where that head was used in ported form on a 440, and it ran quite well.
 
On my 451 engine I use ported 915 heads with the larger 2.14 intake and 1.81 ex valves. And this set up works really good. Makes real good power.
 
Thanks for the info man. I guess I'll have to take a closer look at them then. I remember when I bought it the guy said something about there was something special with those heads, (which is part of what lead me to believe they were the Max Wedges), but maybe they had been modified a little bit or something. That may also explain the Polk Performance stamp on the heads themselves. What would it do to the overall value of the motor with the 6 pack set up knowing now that they are the 516 heads?

The original 6 pack motors came with 906 heads, which are readily available. I have 2 sets for sale. The 516 heads aren't worth much, there are lots of them around and not sought after. The short block 440 you have is a 1970? They go for $200 to 450, but I once bought one for $75 with a steel crank, less oil pan. The most valuable piece you have is the complete 6 pack set up. Does it have the air filter and linkage? Fuel lines? Advertise it here under perf parts for sale. I think you can get $1500 for it.

Haven't figured out what to ask for it yet, just trying to figure out what I can get for it right now. I think there are some pictures of the whole motor in that link I posted in the original post if you'd like to take a gander though.

Yep, the I.D. pad is stamped F, it also has an HP stamp and it has a casting date of 11-7-69. It's basically complete from heads to oil pan, minus stuff like the distributor, alternator and water pump. I do have an air filter and the linkage is the only thing attached to the carbs. New Stainless Steel Fuel lines and carb gaskets I have stashed in storage. The carbs are missing the vacuum diaphragms.

Partial Vin above the oil pan on the passenger side is the way to tell right? There would be a V or M indicating 6 pack for 1970 I think? Here's a picture of the partial Vin. If I understand things right the D would be the plant that it was assembled at? And the intake is cast iron. casting number is 2946276 and there is also a date tag on it that reads 10-22-69
