Hello folks...

today I made a long journey with my Coronet... everything went fine 1... everything ? No .

When I am driving at @ 50-60 mph ( 2300-2500 rpm ) my engine makes a ticking sound ..coming from the drivers side of the engine.. If I decellerate..sound is gone steady cruise sound is back ... accellerate... sometimes it´s there.... mostly not... Idle ...no issues... up to 2000 rpm..nothing. ????

The engine ( 440 ) is stock... more or less.... EDE Performer Intake EDE650 AVS Carb. Mopar Breakerless Ign.

The oil I am using is 10W40 semi synthetik...( with a bottle of EOS )

Oil Pressure is @ 25-30 PSI ( idle HOT ) and 60-65 PSI at cruising speed ( 1500 rpm -up )
The manifold gaskets are from RAMFLEX ...

Any Ideas ? Should I change the oil ?

Greetings and Thanks from Germany

i would try a thicker oil first and see what happens.maybe 20/50.are you sure its mechanical noise and not pinging from predetonation?carbon build up can cause that when an older motor gets hotter from extended driving.wont do it on short trips.

...I will change the oil ! The Ignition timing is 12 deg before TDC @idle 35 deg. all in @ 2600 rpm . The temp doesn´t go higher than
185 /190 deg.
as I wrote... when I stop the car.( idle ) Nothing.. start up .... nothing.... all is quiet ...till I reach more or less 50 mph... The inside of the engine is clean...no sludge...no carbon ...

X2, I agree a thicker oil would be a good start, if it stops the ticking you may have a week lifter. I would say check for exhaust leak as well but I would think it would do it at idle as well (check for carbon at exhaust gaskets and collector). Good luck

.... thank you all for your answers... Tomorrow I will put some Liftercleaner Stuff in the engine..a go for a ride... the next step would be checkin the pushrods... /lifters... and the cam .

The exhaust will also be checked for leaks ! ... Hope it´s only a "plugged lifter bore..."

...changed the oil today... went with 10W30 ! Now the idle is a little faster ...aprox. 40 rpm .... and the sound is gone !
Looks like the oil was the "bad boy"

Greetings Juergen

BTW... of course I turned down the idle....back to 700 rpm in N

weird that you used a thinner oil and it solved the issue. what brand oil do you use? the stuff with high zinc?

Plus your idle oil pressure is pretty high I think.

..used "Kroon Oil" ...this oil has enough ZINK because it is formulated for Old cars.. I talked with a technican from Kroon oil, and he stated that the Zink level is 100% high enough for the flat tapped cams..
My oil pressure is now @ 25 psi at idle ( in Drive ) and @ 60 psi at 2600 prm .

Next step is to go for Royal Purple 5W30 HPS full synthetic... with a good amount of Zink...( this oil is hard to get here..where I live))
but I found a source in the Netherlands.... hope to recive the oil by the end of November

I'm actually having the same ticking noises too. Only when the engine is hot. I only notice it on deceleration. I'll be doing an oil change with 20w50.

Idle seems a little high but without a tach I can't tell for sure. Vacuum reads 15 at idle. Oil pressure is around 20psi at idle.

Did you end up using the lifter cleaner?

no I didn´t use some cleaner stuff... I changed the oil... went with 10w30 but my oil pressure is@ 25 PSI at Idle in DRIVE
in Neutral ...oil pressure is @ 35 PSI As far as I investigated the OEM oil back in those days when "our cars " were new... was a 20W20 or 10w30 weight.... perhaps the thick w50 oil is too thick..??
