I finally got my oil pan off today. The engine builder used paper gaskets and copious amounts of sealant but it was still leaking. So now i have 2 felpro rubber coated steel gaskets to replace them.

When i removed the old windage tray, i noticed 2 decent sized gouges where 2 of the connecting rods have grazed the tray. I also noticed that it is directly ontop of where the oil pickup tube snakes its way under. The issue i noticed is the pickup tube is slightly pressing against the windage tray in that spot, and taking it out of its already tight tolerances. Ill be ordering a new windage tray anyways since mine didnt survive removal.

So the questions are, are there different pickup tubes that can be utilized? Can i tweak the current one to stop pushing on the tray?

Also, with these nice felpro gaskets, is adding sealant still recommended? Anyone have trouble sealing those seams at the water pump and the rear main seal?

Sorry for all the questions! Thanks in advance

In my 493 stroker, the 4.15 crank required more clearance. Milodon sells a windage tray for stroker cranks, give them a call they should be able to help you .I also had to clearance the dipstick area.Good Luck

Thanks ill give milodon a call! Glad it isnt just my setup.

Instead of trying to modify the tube, maybe clearance the tray instead. Cut out for better clearance. Providing the pickup's location is correct.

You can definitely "massage" the windage tray and pickup tube a little bit if needed. I think it's lucky you found the rod clearance problem! You don't really have a "choice" of pickup tubes in the sense that I think you're thinking about though there are definitely some variations in pickup/pan. I found out the hard way to use the same manufacturer for both the pan/pickup. Also, I'd still go ahead and add some RTV to the gaskets. What's it going to hurt? After the pan's edge gets tightened down a few times they can get distorted sometimes.

I have a Milodon 30930 pan & the pickup. I needed to dent the tray a bit. The pickup was in the proper spot.

Thanks for all the input guys. Im currently using a moroso oil pan, and a mopar windage tray. The tray was a correct, deeper uni, but the oil pickup tube was pushing up against it just enough to go ut of tollerance. Thats why i was wondering if i can just tweak the tube down a couple mm to get relief off the tray.

I called milodon and he said to get the 32005 tray for my 4.150 stroke setup. I am considering doing a milodon oil pan too, buti think my moroso one should do fine.

I may do the modify the tray route if this new one still needs it. Just cutout the area that the pickup tube is hitting the tray at. Shouldnt affect the performance at all since the tube will be covering the hole up.

Ill also go ahead and toss some sealant on these gaskets. I already have the felpro gaskets on hand, so i dont really need that fancy summit tray w gaskets (although had i known about that thing before, i wish i had!)

FYI, the last windage tray I used was the Mopar stroker piece. It required just a small amount of denting with the Milodon pickup. I kept the flat of the pickup parallel to the pan bottom.

Well after a lot of trial and error, i found the setup that worked. I ordered the milodon tray, but it was too deep for the baffles of the moroso oil pan to fit. So i ordered the milodon oil pan. It does not work with my moroso oil pickup tube. So i said screw it and just modified the windage tray to fit perfectly around my moroso pickup tube and seat properly into the moroso oil pan.

Besides the repetitive trial and error of trimming the tray, it went fairly smoothly. So now i have it all bolted up with 2 new gaskets, and a bead of sealent between every layer. Its been curing today, so ill fill it with oil tomorrow and see what happens!

The bonus of doing this was i got to remove all my steering linkage and replace the tierods, idler arm and pitman arm. The joints were real bad! Next is radiator. The hoses are old and the radiator is old and leaking.

Thanks for everyones help.

Oh and for anyone curious, the moroso oil pan seems significantly more heavy duty than milodon. Thicker metal in every conceivable location.

Yes windage tray fitting is very frustrating, even with the stuff that's supposed to go together.
