i have a 69 charger with a built 440. the motor is bored 40 over...i have an edelbrock performer rpm cam along with a performer intake and an 800cfm carb. i am having problems with the car stay running. it is loading up with gas at idle and stalls. it fires back up but will only stay running if i give it some throttle. if i put it in gear it also stalls. my question is could it be that i need adjustable rocker arms being that i have a performance cam? or am i ok with running stock non adjustable rocker arms?

1st the carb is to big on cfms! you should be around 750. 2nd what are your plug readings? sounds like you need to lean it out a lot! 3rd do you have the proper stall converter for what the cam requires? 4rth what is your timming set at?

Do you have a Holley? Have you watched what happens with the air cleaner off? Is fuel gushing out of the bowl vent (small tube at very top)? If so remove the needle and seat assy and check/replace the o-ring. It's very possible that o-ring is not sealing and letting fuel bypass the needle valve. Or you have other float related issues or a piece of crud in the needle.

Stock rockers are not too happy with elevated spring pressures so I recommend using the iron adjustables with the 3/8" push rods for maximum longevity. Also, not that it matters much, but the ratio may be slightly more than 1.5:1. Isky has a nice set.

Tell us what type of carb and if it was NIB or used and have you checked vacuum? If it is a holley you may have a bad power valve or valves or may also have a gasket that doesn't cover the vacuum ports on the base flange properly causing a major vacuum leak. 800 is a fine carb for a 440 if you have headers. Another issue with carbs, cam and idle is you may need to drill idle air bypass holes in the throttle plates near the transfer slots. In order to keep a big engine running with lower vacuum from a cam people open up the throttle and end up exposing the transfer slots causing an over rich condition at idle. Chrysler used bypass holes from the factory even on the lowly 318 with a BBD 2bbl.
