This might be a dumb question . I'm wanting to build a 440 for my 71 roadrunner .. Does it matter what year the motor is or if it's out of a motor home?

NO, externally all the same. later models had bigger water jackets for better cooling (75-78).

block is a block is a block...actually some claim the mid 70's are better than the 60's

Block no .. top end of motorhome has different heads, water pump housing, exhaust manifolds etc. .. probably oil pan/pick up too

So just swap them out for regular RB stuff

Most 440 motor homes are just 440's - at least that I have seen. The odd top end you're thinking of is the industrial 413. Those engines did make it into motor homes but I think really BIG motor homes. The van front end ones were typically the regular 440's.

I have a 77 440 in my 66 Belvedere and it's quite happy.

You are correct Meep .. thanks for pointing that out

Compression ratio might be different with 70/and earlier being higher- if you were/were not planning on buying new pistons, or thinking of low octane gas.

Truck oil pans/pickups are different.

Brackets and pulleys are usually an issue, and sometimes truck/MH brackets are different and not "car friendly".

OP said he wants to build a 440 not use one that is together so to quickly answer his question without making anymore confusion, is to say all 440's are the same besides the water cooling jackets in the later blocks which makes no difference to any part you put on it.

That's right Benno. Kind of like a guy I knew describing women. "Flip them up side down and they all look like sisters."

My original 440 was pulled out of a 73' wrecked highway patrol car and had 213 motor home heads, six pack rods, windage tray, etc. The 213 castings were actually better castings in my opinion, due to the increased water jackets, cooling is much better in heavy traffic. Most all BBM iron heads flow identical numbers, so I wouldn't worry about finding the elusive 906's, etc.

One good thing about picking up a 440 out of a motor home is that they usually have a lot less mileage on them than one out of a car. My 1983 D150 shop truck has a motor home 440. I had no issues with the transplant and love that big block! :D

...and their usually "highway" miles.
