Picked up this 489 rear from Craigslist, it had been on a 1970 roadrunner. The configuration seems odd in that the calipers are mounted front on one side, and to the rear on the other. Wondering if I could adapt these caliper mounting brackets to my 68 Coronet. The axles have tapered bearings. The 3.23 ring gear looks like it is in good condition?

This looks like the very rare one year only Imperial setup - although I don't recall if the Imperial in 74 had the 8.75 or the 9.25. I have a set of these brakes that I plan to adapt to my Dana 60 and they look like they will bolt on. If you wouldn't mind getting me some close up detailed pics of the caliper bracket as it attaches to the axle housing that would be fantastic! PM me and I'll give you my email or just post them.

I had to go assemble for some better pics of how the brackets go together. The actual caliper bracket from the "Imperial" has only 4 holes to fit to the flange. Not sure why the other hole could not be drilled through the Imperial bracket. Here's a few pics.

Thanks for posting! If nothing else this thread will become a service manual for this very rare brake setup. I'll dig mine out and post pics as well.

I do remember about the one missing bolt and i was just going to leave it out, but yeah, why didn't they just drill that extra hole? Save money on labor??

Now the $500.00 question. That caliper bracket gets sandwiched between the axle flange and the bearing retaining plate, so naturally the axles will stick out the thickness of the bracket and that means less spline engagement. Also the rotor slips over the wheel studs and that will push the wheel out even farther. On my 69 RR there should be plenty of tire room but not the case if I wanted to do this swap on my 66 Bel. Like I said I need to dig the stuff out and start looking at it very carefully and may answer many of my own questions.

Good point on the offset caused by bracket and rotor. The next question is what about emergency brake, do your parts include any?

The E brake will require some engineering but it's doable. I'm not sure what your timeline is to get this installed but we may be able to work together on this. Keep in mind I have machine tools and welding equipment and can make parts that otherwise would be expensive. For instance if I have to make a bracket for my car I can make an extra for little additional effort.
