489 Differnetial Rebuild

First differential rebuild. Someone put a non Sure grip unit in.
Cleaned with wire brush and grinder Welds were terrible. Cleaned inside the case with muriatic acid. Be very care with the acid. Paint is Ace Hardware rattle can black and clear.
Differential rebuild tool is T&D Machine Pinion Depth Tool like -2 or something. Couldn't find two tubes to fit each other to build a rotating stand so I used 1/4 plate and 3/4 square stock to hold it to the bench. Fingering out the shims wasn't easy but we got it. Started with a .010 shim we pressed on the pinion gear then used the diff. tool to figure out what other shims we needed. Adjustment was side to side was easy.

I forgot the to say the gears are Richmond 3:91's. Installation kit was Doctor Diff's.
And ring to pinion bolts are right hand thread.

Rock on, I'm right behind you on this one. My housing has been cleaned, but haven't really touched my third member(s) yet.

Loving the shop computer! I setup a desk for a computer / TV / whatever in my shop, but it turned out to be more horizontal storage space! LOL
