I have a 5.7 with the 6 speed manual from a 2010 Challenger going into a 1970 Satty this Spring. What rear gear ratio should I get? The car will not be a dragster but a cruiser around town and long trips. But my curiosity will want to gun it once in a while.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I assume you are running an 8 3/4 rear. A set of 3.91 would be a good rear ratio for everyday use......

I talked to a few guys with the 6 speed an one of them had a 3:91 an told me that first was almost worthless, he said he was shifting into second immediately. If I remember correctly I thought the challenger came with a 3:06. I'm putting a 6.1 w/ a 6 speed and got a 3:55. Just trying to find the happy medium so you can stomp on it in first and have decent rpm in 6th while cruising. Just the info I came across and passing it along. Good luck with the build it will be a blast to drive.

3:91 was my first choice but not sure if I would like to shift into second rather quickly. I might try the 3:55 gears like you USARoadrunner. Thanks for the feed backs.

What's the first gear ratio on that 6spd.? My 5spd. auto has a 3 to 1 and I run 3.91's with a 28 inch tall tire and it is just fine.

2010 6 speed ratio......

1st...2.97
2nd...2.10
3rd...1.46
4th...1.00
5th....074
6th....050

Ok, so my auto has a steeper first gear and the 6spd has a taller od. At 70 I'm turning 23-2400 rpm. So with that 6spd trans, you should be just hunky dory with a set of 3.91's.

So why not use a set of 3.91's? You can sh!t and git outta the hole and still cruise......what am I missing?

I just passed along info from what people told me. Hell put 4:56 in. I put 3:55 I didn't tell anyone what to go with. Just passing along info to go off by. My bad the 3:06 was in the 5speed auto.

I'd probably run 3.55's just to keep the crusing rpm's down a bit but I also plan to do lots of crusing :)

The 3.91's with the six speed keep the car under or right at 2000rpm at 70mph in the stock challenger with the stock 245's. That is with a 5.7L. First seems fine to me and not excessively low, but I am used to a pickup transmission also, so that is my comparison. I would not be afraid to go to 4.10's, but as you say you want to cruise, 3.91 or 3.73 may be better for you.

My Ram with the 5.7 cruises at 65 mph at 1700 rpm with 34" tires. So if it has the power to push a 6000 lb truck around at speed in double overdrive at 1700 I am not worried about being too low. For me I am shooting for a similar speed at cruising to keep the cash in my wallet on those long cruises. But 3.73 or 3.91 might be ok if you don't mind it spinning a bit at speed.

I just checked my rpm's at 80 and I was doing 24-2500, I'm not complaining.
