Just put new plugs and coil packs on my Ram truck and was wondering, what’s the reason for 2 plugs per cylinder. Seem like a unnecessary expense.
And we don’t even want to talk about the one on driver side behind the brake booster.

Plymouth knew people with RR had money to waste so they added the 2nd plug on the truck. :poke:
 
The extra plug fires during the power stroke to more fully burn the hydrocarbons. The second ignition allows additional power in the down stroke while lowering the need for restrictive catalyst plates in the converter.

Sounds like you would be interested in an inline six for fewer plugs and relief from access around the brake booster. Here you go. :poke:

Yep that is correct, no quench areas to speak of in the chamber, dual plugs were needed to pass emissions. If no dual plugs Hydrocarbon emissions would be much higher compared to a wedge type chamber.
 
IMO......best guess is emissions "assuring" complete combustion and reliable, repeatable operation, similar to certain Lycoming and Continental air craft engines and the old Pratt and Whitney Wasp DC3s and later engines......Now, with the precious metal electrode alloys and configurations, spark plugs are designed for 100k service miles b4 replacement........

2017 Jeep Renegade 1.4 Turbo - Every 32,000 miles - At 110,000 Miles now , fourth set and damn damn expensive spark plugs
