Ok my question is what is the difference if any between these two heads other than the years made.

Further review I have found they may be 300J heads. They have 6 valve cover bolts and have the aluminum rocker shaft brackets. Casting number is 2463200-1 (1963). Any input on these?

the 300j head is kind of the forerunner to the magnum head.

I think the 516 head may flow a little better. Do both heads have closed combustion chambers? I know the 516 s do. What size valves do they have in them?

The 300J head is a rare beast. The true answer lies in the intake port floor contour. I know the 516 heads have a flat floor like the later 452 and 346 but have no idea what the 300J head has. The 915 head has the nicely contoured floor like the 906 and that is considered a better design. Reality is if you are building a street motor use the head that needs the least amount of work to keep cost down.

They are closed chambered, have been ported and polished, 2.14 1.81 stainless valves. They have had a lot of work put into them. Not sure about the intake port floor I will have to look. The heads originally came from Jim Hale so I am told.

Reason I'm asking is because I put a $100 down on a 1964 426W for the seller to hold for me until I can come up with $400 more, $500 total for the untouched stock street wedge block, 516 heads, 2 cranks, 1 single 4bbl intake manifold and 1 dual off set 4bbl crossram intake which is additional cost if I'm interested. I might get the crossram intake later following payday. I still got to find out how much he wants for the crossram intake. So what do you guys think? Is this a good deal?

If the cross ram is for a Max Wedge (most likely) the ports will not match up to the 516 heads. This isn't good for performance but the bigger factor is the Max ports are much taller and might not seal at the top edge of the 516 head. An option would be to profile the top of the intake to match the shorter port using high temp epoxy.

So in other words I'll have to find heads that will match up to the cross ram if it's a MAX Wedge? Will MAX Wedge heads fit unto the 426 Street Wedge's block and where can I find heads that will fit my street wedge block and match up to the cross ram intake. It doesn't have to be NOS, can be aluminum too. Is this possible? As it stands I am committed to buying this street wedge with 516 heads, 2 crankshafts, and the 4bbl intake set up for it. Some help here would be greatly appreciated and I'm really sorry for kidnapping this thread but I feel this is great place and time here to get my questions answered really sorry stelldo and thanks a bunch everybody :headbang:

Original Max Wedge heads are pretty expensive and quite rare so don't hold your breath. Those heads had 1.88" exhaust valves, which required a bore notch so the valve didn't hit the block. Other than that they will bolt on. Also the chamber volume is larger than the 516's so you will loose compression.

Yes I have read about the notch for the the exhaust valve. Those are found only in the Max Wedge engines. I'll check the street wedge block once I get it. and post some pics in a new and different thread and again sorry for kidnapping this thread and Thank You Everybody.
