Hi guys

I need help. I have made on my 62' Polara 500 the tapered axle brake conversion. All is perfect. We have built a 68' 742 case with sure grip diff in the axle body. The diff don't have the thrust block spacer kit in it. I have removed it because it was damaged but i have a new one. How do i have to set the axle shaft end play. Do i have to reinstall the thrust block spacer kit? Is it posible to install the later diff type with tapered axles?

Hope you can help. Sorry for my english, i know it's not good but i hope you will understand my question.

Hey Manu
Axle shaft end-play is set by adding/removing shims between axle tube flange and rear brake backing plate. Is the thrust spacer you have the pin or block type? If you have tapered bearings, the thrust spacer must be fitted to be able to adjust end play. You can't use later non-taper axle shafts in tapered axle housing.

Thanks for the quick answer!

The thrust spacer kit is a pin type, like this:

I know that i can't use later non tapered axle shafts, i have tried this :-(

But is it possible to use the later diff type (68' CHarger 742 case) without problems? Do i only have to reinstall the thrust block pin set like on the pic and then set the end play using shims? Sorry if i don't know the exact names of the parts. Where can i get new shims from?

Thanks.

If the '68 742 has the hole through the pinion cross for the thrust pins, just go ahead and install them, and you're set. I needed shims too, but was not able to find a source, so I made them myself.

Just to be clear - You are fitting a '68 742 into the '62 housing with '62 axles that have been converted to slip-fit drums.. Correct?

Ok i will try this. How have you made the shims?

Thanks

I assembled diff/axles without backing plate, made sure both axles were compressing thrust pins and measured how much axle bearing cones stuck out from axle tube flange face. Then turned the spacers required on a lathe and parted them off at 80% of the required thickness (using a flange gasket as template for drilling stud holes). I then also punched out some using various brass shim thicknesses. Then mixed and matched shims during assembly until clearance measured right.

An other last question. I have to set the end play on each side, not like on the later models, only on one side, is that correct?

You can put all shims on one side and none in the other side, or you can put half on each side (like I did) - I don't think it matters...
