Want a feel good story out of the Daytona 500. Remember the 1990 winner Derrick Cope. Now 62 years old Cope qualified his # 15 Chevrolet in the 32 position & will take the green flag today as a heavy dark horse much like the 1990 race. So I’m definitely in the Derrick Cope camp today & hope he wins or at least has a solid finish in the top 10.

Its a restrictor plate event. Yes, they use restrictor plates, they just dont call me that any more.
Even Mikey waltrip won a plate event.
Morgan Shepherd entered a Cup race at age 72.

Yep Morgan sure did.

Thanks Bob, I remember him but had not heard anything about him for years.
Hope he has a good day.

He’s been somewhat active In various other forms of racing. He never had a steady flow of deep funding to stay in the cup level

Good for Cope, hope he has a great day. As much as I like Nascar, the restrictor plate races need to go. They all end up being crash fests, and frankly, the racing on those tracks is boring.

I built his first race car (57 Chevy drag car)! His dad (Don) and uncle (Jerry) were friends and a sponsors of mine! Cope Bros Racing engines! NHRA S/S in the mid 70's & 80"s! Derrick was a promising baseball player was scouted for a ML team He messed up is knee and ended his bb dreams! He raced the 57 for awhile but wasn't really his thing! Got into stock car racing and the rest is history! As they say! Wishing him well in the race!

Yep, and Chris Karamasines went 330mph at the world finals in 2020, and qualified. He 89, and been racing since before i was born. I'm 68.

I have a Chris Karamasines T shirt in my collection. Bought it from his pit at Z-Max

Cope, He's currently 40th right now
don't know how many laps down

Harvick is leading at the last I heard/saw
I'm not actually watching it

It’s under a rain delay. Cope hurt his car badly. Doubt he will be back out

yeah in the 1st or 2nd lap

big delay after 15 laps when another
16+ cars were in a huge redeyed may-lay

raced finished today

big ol' wreck took leaders (took themselves out)
out on the last lap too

Lap 3 and because he and Bubba got together and Cope cut a tire.

3 former champions crashed on that final lap. That’s how on the edge these cars are.
