I believe Carter WCFB's would have been the original carbs set up with a progressive linkage.

They are out there, but as most stuff for our cars it's darn near impossible to find in good shape. They were also used in marine applications. The smallest Carter I can think of would be the 9400 AFB
http://pff.hostkansas.com/pffimages3/400_500_throttles.JPG (see carb with smaller throttle bores on the left) but even those might be over kill for a stock engine. If you can find a pair of early 273 carbs or even some from an early 60's big block those are about 400 CFM each. The original 383 and 413 in line dual carbs were AFB's about the size of the 273 carb but good luck finding them. The WCFB has a unique bolt pattern and you will need an adapter plate to fit the AFB's
Another small carb that you might be able to use, and kind looks the same as the WCFB is the Rochester 4GC (I'm sure I'll get some crap for suggesting this, but hey, if it works..)

Still might not be an easy carb to find in good shape, much less two, but I believe they came on more cars so the odds might be better. I'm sure they are not cheap anymore either. I think the bolt pattern is also small like the WCFB.
I'd suggest the Autolite 4100 with the 1.08 venturi marking but they won't fit inline on that intake (I don't think) plus they are not usually cheap. A 450 CFM Autolite 4300 from a 302 might fit

That's pretty much the list of small vintage OEM carbs.
As a crazy thought you might consider two Holley 350 or 500 2 BBL's.
Those are easy swap meet items.
