I have acquired a 2X4bbl intake for the 318 poly ( casting 1822004 ) which I believe, if not NOS then the cleanest I've ever seen. Anyone know what the carbs should be ? Or which, easier to locate, later aftermarket 4bbls would work? The motor will be basically stock, with headers, cyl head clean-up, and a mild hydraulic cam. I don't think more than 350-500cfm per carb will be necessary.
Thanks in advance.

I believe Carter WCFB's would have been the original carbs set up with a progressive linkage.

They are out there, but as most stuff for our cars it's darn near impossible to find in good shape. They were also used in marine applications. The smallest Carter I can think of would be the 9400 AFB http://pff.hostkansas.com/pffimages3/400_500_throttles.JPG (see carb with smaller throttle bores on the left) but even those might be over kill for a stock engine. If you can find a pair of early 273 carbs or even some from an early 60's big block those are about 400 CFM each. The original 383 and 413 in line dual carbs were AFB's about the size of the 273 carb but good luck finding them. The WCFB has a unique bolt pattern and you will need an adapter plate to fit the AFB's

Another small carb that you might be able to use, and kind looks the same as the WCFB is the Rochester 4GC (I'm sure I'll get some crap for suggesting this, but hey, if it works..)

Still might not be an easy carb to find in good shape, much less two, but I believe they came on more cars so the odds might be better. I'm sure they are not cheap anymore either. I think the bolt pattern is also small like the WCFB.

I'd suggest the Autolite 4100 with the 1.08 venturi marking but they won't fit inline on that intake (I don't think) plus they are not usually cheap. A 450 CFM Autolite 4300 from a 302 might fit http://www.ponycarburetors.com/images/carbs_012.jpg but same cost and availability issue.

That's pretty much the list of small vintage OEM carbs.

As a crazy thought you might consider two Holley 350 or 500 2 BBL's.
Those are easy swap meet items.

check the casting date on your manifold, and see what you have, supposedly these two four manifolds were only made in 57 and 58 the later 58 manifolds used the small AFB. The marine engines used a single four setup with an edlebrock manifold.

64plybelvwgn I recall summit has Edelbrock 4104 or something like that.. its a 500cfm carb and is setup for running dual 4bbls

Thank you 73RR for referring me to this great site!

The cast iron Poly dual quad intake will accept both the WCFB (not preferred because of the expense in rebuilding properly...) and the new AFB style Edelbrock carbs.

You can run two 500cfm vacuum Edelbrocks with a mild 264/.450" ([email protected]") 110LC Poly cam and it will work well. Richard Kinsley has been running this setup in his B-body for some time with good performance. 3.91 gears and a 2300-2500stall convertor will enhance the Poly's performance with this combo.
You will need two carb spacer/adapters to clear the smaller throttle bores in the Poly cast iron dual quad (or single four) intake; make them easily/inexpensively out of laminated plywood as this is your best heat insulator.
