I recently bought a 64 Sport Fury and my mechanic said both the pump and gear box leaked. So I ordered rebuilt items.

The Pitman arm on the rebuilt gear box is different than the original. The original Pitman arm pokes down into steering linkage. While the replacement Pitman arm is longer and designed to mount underneath and poke up into the linkage. The actual final dimension will be about the same so it may work. It is the correct part number Classic Industries. Is this replacement unit meant to work this way?

To answer your next question: The mechanic said the old Pitman arm will not fit onto the rebuilt steering gear box.

In 1973 mopar changed to a larger output shaft diameter. If you have the larger sector box you have to use the 73 and up pitman arm.

The pitman arm is tappered so it can only attach the way it was. The hole in the center link is also tappered.

Much thanks to those that replied. I do have the wrong part and Classic Industries said they have had this same problem before, so they are going back to the supplier. Meanwhile the car sits in my mechanics garage and he will probably never want to see me again.
