I found a good body to start my AWB build. Anyone know if the original 12 AWB A/fX cars used fiberglass front fenders, doors, bumpers and trunk lid? I am trying to make it as accurate as possible to the cars like they were originally built. Thanks

fenders doors hood deck lid and dash for sure also put post on doors and plexiaglass side glass and bubble windshield

And the rest of the bodies were acid dipped. You aren't going to go that far, are you? LOL
I read that one of them kept getting eaten by the acid after the dipping and showed up to the racer with the roof laying inside the car.

Cool project you're doing - keep us posted!

There's a lot of things to consider when taking one of these cars on...The original cars had a few issues with things that were really done wrong back then...I was thinking there were 15 original cars?? and all of those were supposed A990's pulled from the assembly line...If your thinking very original its going to be very expensive...The home built cars built by the racers were all over the map with the % of wheelbase movement varying on different builds. With those cars there really was no normal anything...Some got straight-axels...others chose to relocate the K frames...Nobody likes to hear it but not all of them always had a Hemi...
There's a lot of ways you can go with your build and in the end it will be fine...Don't get hung up on all of the "You have to do this" crap that gets floated around...and for god sakes don't over-restore it...They were kind of primitive and a little rough around the edges originally...

Jim Schild put out an Authenticity Guide 1965 Dodge and Plymouth Altered Wheelbase Hemi Hardtops....I don't know if is still available...I got one in 2013 from Jim when i was building my 65 Dodge AWB...very good information...covers the history and every little detail of the factory build cars very well. I don't know if it is still available...It was published by the Auto Review, Columbia Il. www.the autoreview.com.

Back to your original question! Sled City is the only outfit that makes the fenders and hoods for the AWBs ( Fiberglass Plus molds)! He also does the bumpers, scoops!

Amblewagon built 6 Plymouths and 6 Dodges for Chrysler, supposedly. But I've also heard there were only 11 built by them in total.

Have you ever seen this document? Very cool and would be helpful, I'm sure.

Yes I have this document. I also heard that 12 cars were built 6 Dodges and 6 Plymouths but only 5 Plymouths were "given" out one was kept as a test mule at the proving grounds. Wonder what ever happened to that one?

I bet Jim Schild knows where the 12th one ended up. I should dig out his Maximum Performance book and see if it says in there. I'ts been awhile since I read it so I don't remember.

Gentlemen not trying to crap on anybodies wheaties or talk **** on jim schild but his book along with a few other books are far from being 100% correct & there is a reason for that. They are all a good source for general basic info which can be found on the net now but the true intimate personal details of these cars are kept quiet to slow down the rebodies & fakes.

We had the factory instruction manual supplied to Amblewagon when restoring one of the factory cars years ago. All the jack brackets etc were cut off with an air chisel, very sloppy. The 1/4 panel finish was horible. Take a look at a original pic of the Sox & Martin car. All had acid dip steel, glass body parts that was very thick, sedan doors, no vent windows, long torsion bars, K head Hemi.

Absolute truth right here ^^^^
Schild should not be taken as the definitive last word on anything Mopar.
As an author, he has deadlines to make and can't do the in-depth research required on everything he writes about. He counts on a few guys in the "inner circle" for most of his info. Some of the info is from memory, urban legend and factory paperwork.

In addition to the 4208.7 AWB manual there were 3 full scale drawings (front, mid and rear section) that came with the Chrysler AWB kits. These were similar to the 16-foot long Hemi engine blueprint that's floating around.

Fiberglass Plus molds were gone many years ago. My altered wheelbase fender molds were made from metal fenders that I had modified and I still own them also. For those who are interested, we have package deals which seem to be selling better than the separate piece deals right now. Business is good.

Anybody know what the color of the gelcoat on the fiberglass parts made for the 12 cars was?

My original Fglass parts on my 65 Dodge were black (Chrysler supplied in 65)
