Hi i would like to fit the widest tire i can under my 65 coronet without mini tubbing or relocating the leafs, what width rear rims and backspacing would be good, maybe thinking a 275 60 15 tire or something ,want to run era correct bias ply tires running a 355 sg rear with a 383 auto anyone know what would be a good combo? thanks.

You hit the nail on the head.

I was told a 15x8 with a 4 1/2 inch back space is the limit without moving the springs in and/ or tubbing and the 275 60 15 is the tire. I have people say they fit a 275 50 15 but have never seen that on a car.

i ran a 275- 60- 15" on a 15"x8centerline wheel with 4 7/8 back spacing on my 65 coronet had no problems

I recently had my friend's 275/60/15's on the back of my 65 Coronet Convertible. The wheels were 15x8 chrome Magnum 500's w/ 4'5" backspacing. The tires cleared all around, and did not rub. I drove them for ~ 1week, but there was only ~5/8" between the outer wheel well and the tire. I was scared that if I hit a big bump the sidewall would get shredded. I'm probably going to put 255/60/15's on it when I but my wheels and tires so I have a little extra room. This size will still fill out the wheel well nicely.

I just had a set of 275-60-15s mounted on some 15x8s so I will put one on this evening and get a shot of it. I am pretty sure it is what I had on my 65 belvedere and its the same dimensions.

I have ran 275/60/15 on 15x7 (3.75 backspace) wheels. Good clearance, but the tire has some bulge to it. The wheel really needs to be 8" wide with that tire. So, I just ordered 15x8, with 4.5" backspace wheels for the rear. It's going to be tight. I may need to massage the inner fender a bit to gain some clearance.

I finally got out to the shop and put this on the car to see again. It is a 275/60/15 on a 15x8 wheel 4 1/2 bs. Here are a couple of pics

I have 275/60R15 on the rear and no problems at all. A little snug when i put on the 28x10.5 M/T slicks , but worth the fun !

Very nice. Is it mini tubed? Move the springs? what????

no stock location on springs, no minitubs everything stock, its all in the backspacing, those torque thrust d rear wheels were a stock item but outer rim was steel instead of aluminum.
