I am sure someone has solved this issue before. Restored a 65 Belvedere. Changing stock single traction rearend to a 489 posi unit. Problem : Drivers side axle is too long. Is there another axle i can use or can i cut this one ? If so, how much ?

Never heard that one before.Same one's that came out should go back in.

Got to pipe in. I just did the same thing(489 case into '65 housing) and didn't encounter that issue. Both axles were the same length and it only took some slight tapping with a rubber mallet to get them in. The housing was supposed to be a '65 unit, and I got the axles and some brake stuff with the housing. Did you start out with equal length axles? To the best of my knowledge, there is no difference between sides(length-wise) on these. Hmmm...I'll let the more experienced cats deal with this one-I know I'll learn something.

Are you putting them back on the same they came out of?One has the adjuster on it.

Putting them back in the same as they came out. Adjustment axle on the passenger side. It fit fine. Drivers side axle about a 1/4 to 3/8 inch too long. Both axles are the same length. When lying the housings side by side, the axle actually slides into the 741 single traction housing about 3/8 inchs farther than in the 489 posi housing. May just have to cut 3/8 inch off the axle and hope for the best.

Don't make a different if it was a posi rear or not.I would check make sure nothing not binding up.

Don't be cutting anything off! Your not holding your mouth right!

Have someone rotate the other axle while you push in on your side. If that doesn't help do some visuals on your bearing and bearing seat, make sure something in your rear assembly hasn't been damaged or misaligned...:)

PS Would your passenger axle be adjusted in too far not allowing enough room? Just a thought, never had your prob. before either...

didnt some of the rearends(third members) have a small button like thing you had to remove to make em fit? Seems like I remember pulling one out of the 742 case I dropped in my 64's rear to make the axles seat right??

Green bearings require the button to be removed. The 742 I have the two rows of splines in the pig weren't lined uptogether. The axle would engage the first set and not the other. Which suregrip do you have? If it is the rebuildable it should have two sets of splines. Was the gears used in another car with out issues? Pull the pig and try the axles in that side outside of the housing to make sure if in doubt.
