I would like to replace the original rear end housing axles etc.

What are some of you doing and do I have options for later year Mopars that would perform in its place ?

Basically wondering how many options I may have ?

thx

I have a 65 Coronet that has a 8 3/4 and I am upgrading to a Dana 60. I think my 8 3/4 would do just fine but it depends on how much hp and torque you plan on running....I plan on a lot of both and I am really hard on things. Not sure on the later model rearends but good luck,

I have the same Dana and a spool in my car for 30 years.I did bend a perch once,if I were in the left lane I would have taken the tree down:lol:

What about getting a new housing and axle setup from 67-70 B Body ( I will have trouble finding a 65 -67 B in my area)... the width is close enough and the spring perches are the same any reason why this would not work.... I have a 3.23 for it already and will be just a street driver.

Housing widths, flange to flange

B BODY
'65-'67= 54 1/4"
'68-'70= 54 15/16"

Spring perch widths (center-to-center)

B BODY
'62-'70= 44"

thx

I think they get measured flange to flange. Also look at the "E" body spec's,they might be a little shorter

Just another option, although probably an overkill one: Moser fabbed 8.75":

I am surprised none of you have tried this. Are all you guys running the tapered axles on your 65's. Those of course who are running original equipment.

My '63 had a '69 B body 8 3/4 rear. It bolted in and worked really well.

The current motor started killing the sure-grip and the 7290 u-joint broke.

I scored a ton dually Dana rear axle, cut the ends off, put 8 3/4 ends on and did Dr. Different axles and a spool. All in I have about $950 in it after doing most of it myself and help from a couple of friends. I duplicated the width of the later B body axle for simplicity.

I installed a '65 Coronet housing/axles in my '63 Fury to dump the tapered axles and a '64 Fury sure-grip 3:23 now upgraded to 3:55 with some regret for cruising poly 318. My next step is to look at tranny upgrade maybe OD with engine rebuild..of course what I'm seeing on these posts are out of my league motor wise.

If you car is going to be a "street driver" then I have to ask why you feel the need to replace your current 8.75 rear end? The tapered axle is plenty strong and if you do the brake drum conversion http://hotrodsandhemis.com/TaperedAxleBrakes.html which will cost you about a hundred bucks, then maintenance is just as easy as the later versions.

Did 65s have tapered axles? Mine never did. Thought 64 was last year. Tapered axles create a real problem doing brake work, had those on my 63 b body. Curious about the last year for tapered axles

You're right. I was thinking his car was a '64. Same question if its a '65 though.... for a street car, why replace the 8.75??

Agree with Centerline. No real need and once you do the drum modification, future brake work will be easy. With street tires, even BIG street tires, it's really hard to hurt a properly set-up 8.75".

Exactly. With street treaded tires, you won't ever get enough traction to hurt the driveline. It's when I stepped up to ET Streets that **** got real! LOL!

Since the car in the original post is a 65 it does not have a tapered axle rear and should not need any drum modifications, unless someone has already put an earlier rear under it. So, the question for stanhope55 is; why do you want to change the rear housing? Is there something wrong with it?

Rick62 is correct far as I know; the tapered axles were done after '64 which is the reason I put in a '65 (Coronet housing/axles) in my '63.
