Okay so I came home from work the other night and was perusing eBay when I saw a chrome 426 air cleaner that was ending in a few minutes. So, I ended up winning it, paid and unfortunately THEN I read the full description. It seems someone had riveted a pie tin type thing to the top of the air cleaner. I thought these came on wedge cars but after researching these a bit I found conflicting reports on which cars had the "commando 426" decals on the air cleaner. I have read that Plymouth cars had the decal and dodge didn't. Also read thar only c bodies with a 426 had the chrome air cleaner with the commando decal. So now, I would obviously like to cover the rivet holes with a decal, but was wondering if the air cleaner decal would be correct for a 65 belvedere. So here I am asking again for you guy's two cents. What is correct??? Secondly, some genius used a fair amount of "adhesive" to secure the pie tin.(I guess the rivets might not hold). What do you guys think I could use to remove this stuff without damaging the chrome? Thirdly, this air cleaner had the wrong base(see photo). It completely seals up the air cleaner, not allowing any air in. It's for a snorkeled one I'm guessing. I have heard that the bases for these are reproduced. Anyone know if that's true? Okay well I suppose that is enough air cleaner questions for one night. Thanks in advance for the schooling guys!

You may want to also measure the opening for the carb, many of the early Carters were smaller than those used today. Off the top of my head I'm going to say they were 4 1/8 inch but I may be wrong.

Yeah, the baseplate doesn't fit over a Holley. Time to keep looking.

I have a 2 barrel air cleaner you could carve up to maybe work for yours if your interested.

Greetings Hosehead,
I can't speak to all your questions--but I can tell you that the chrome air cleaner DID, IN FACT come on all the 426 "street" wedge engines in 64 and 65, B-Bodies included. Also, if that smudge is just the adhesive, soak it with any citrus based degreaser--the orange oil will disolve the adhesive and not harm the chrome. Best of luck, Bob

Thanks guys. I knew that I had the right air cleaner, I was mainly curious about the decal. I'm starting to think it might be one of those things that was a bit random. Looks like I'll be using one do hide the holes this person drilled in mine. Thanks for the responses though guys!

Yeah, the baseplate doesn't fit over a Holley. Time to keep looking.

Just buy a cheap speed shop base plate for a Holley as the top part of the air cleaner will cover it and no one will know. This is a B body specific site and so far no one has been able to answer your question about the decal (although I don't THINK they had one) so how many people are going to know if it is correct or not when they see it?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I was putting it together using the base off of my barracuda(340 unsilenced air cleaner) and it looks pretty good. You can't see the baseplate at all. I have also been talking with a guy who has owned a ton of early b's and he says only the 426 c bodies had the decal. Good to know. Thanks again everyone.

Plymouth decal Dodge no decal.

If the base pictured fits the carb,to be used.modify the base either drill 1" holes around the outer edge, can't be seen when installed or cut it down and used a filter that fits the base.

HOSEHEAD:

Only The 1965 Fury 426 Street Wedge Had The Commando 426 Decal On The Air Cleaner! 1964 & 1965 Belvedere & Satellite No! I Just Finished Going Crazy Trying To Find A Damn Air Cleaner Base That Would Fit That Big Chrome 426 Wedge Air Cleaner!

I think that's correct. Decal on the fury only. I have never seen the decal on the b bodies.....

Damn Hosehead, you got hosed. For all that trouble, you might just as well buy a new one. They are still available, you know that, right?

Thanks! I'm probably gonna just find some cheap air cleaner as I will probably use a Holley. It is fascinating learning all this early b body stuff. Thanks again guys for all the help!
