I’m not finding a vin pad at all where docs say it should be - passenger side above oil pan behind motor mount. I did check both sides. Can someone weigh in please?

Won't find squat on a '66.... started in late '68
Recently worked on a one owner '68 R/T with the partial 8 digit vin on both (rear top) engine and (front top) trans. Sept '67 build.

Yep, where they belong in '68, he's asking pan rail... guess I should have said "won't find squat THERE.."

I mainly posted that because of the 9/67 build. Apparently it was done during the entire '68 production run, not just later cars. I was surprised to see the numbers myself on such an early car.

No Vin on the block in 66. Matching numbers only by date code on the block and heads. No way to prove original engine like 68-up.

I had read somewhere (on this site?) that
dealer serviceable warranty blocks were
shipped unstamped, and that builders
erased numbers during machining processes.
My '68 440 block has no stamped numbers in
any of the three typical locations, only casting
numbers.

Yup I read about that too. But on my block there is no vin pad at all blank or otherwise :)

No VIN on pad makes for an easy resto if no original motor, just find one with a casting date 1 to 3 months before vehicle assembly date.

That’s good. Because all the blocks for the year are the same.

Again, no VIN stamp or even provision for a stamp on 1966 blocks.

...and no 1966 B body cars came with a 440.

C and D body only.

You have a b-body right, no 440's in b-bodies in 66. 440's came in C-bodies. Pads on passengers by cylinder head are 383's if your looking in a 66 SM. Must be a engine trans plant from a C-body?

Sorry forgot to reply. Its a 69 GTX with a 66 440. I'm assuming all the head stampings are under the valve covers?

Like mentioned there is no raised pad along the oil pan rail on a 1966 thru 1968 440 block to allow provisions to stamp a vin.

1968 has a vin stamped near the oil pressure switch( ive actually heard this started very late 1967 models depending on build plant )

1969 is when the oil pan rail vin location started.

Late 66 casting date could have been for a 67 R/T, GTX, or Charger as well as C and d body.

On a 66 block you should at least have one of these. On the pan rail near bell housing. P was a standard 4 bbl engine and S was an HP engine. First 4 digits are the build date.
