'66 Coronet 440 engine decoding

VIN of- WH23G6 means it's a factory 383 car.

*note there is an error in the 1966 factory service manual engine VIN digit decoding.

* also not that all 383 engines in 1966 B body cars were four barrel carburetor engines.
got it, looking at my VIN its shown - WH23E6

does that mean it was maybe a 318 from the factory?

So in a b body, you could get a 383-2 alongside the 361-2?

Edit, sorry I read that wrong.
* note*

Not in 1966.

D=273 (all 2 barrels in 66 B body)
E=318 (poly head)
F=361 (all 2 barrels in 66)
G=383 (all four barrels in 66)

got it, good to know it was originally a 318 unless its had 2 motor swaps

Oil 10-30, 15-40, 20- 50, you pick. Get some with zinc.
Plugs NGK XR5
Wires pretty wide open, 67 coronet RT 440 could be said
Filter Fram PH8A, WIX 51515, ETC
so after looking up the motor work done, and figuring my motor is a '73 RB series 440. im curious if the type of oil filter matters?

i might have a frankenstein motor as my oil pan is a 6 quart oil pan (#200-1142) from an E body
i have a Melling M-63HP high pressure oil pump (but i saw someone point out i dont have a HP motor? hope thats ok)

my current oil in the car is 10w40 and a Mopar MO-090 oil filter (these both say they dont fit a '67 coronet R/T 440 when i plug them in)

i may just stick with what is on it now to avoid messing anything up

Make sure you run oil with Zinc. Flat tappet cams rely on zinc to keep them in good shape. Todays oil doesn't have the zinc the valve train needs.
There are many companies that make oil with zinc. VR1 is decent oil with zinc but there are others out there just make sure you get oil with zinc. Do not use todays Synthetic crap.

Just because the numbers make it out to be a low compression 73 440 does not mean that is what it is. This is my 75 block 440 but looks can deceive you. It also has 1969 valve covers, 1969 HP manifolds as well as a Mopar M1 intake. But the goodies are on the inside. And what was done to the block. Also what was done to the heads. Its not a low compression engine any more. This engine is 9:64 to 1 compression when I was done with it. Could have raised the compression more with different head gaskets. But wanted to keep it gas pump gas. Engine guy told me around 500 HP with 600ish foot pounds of torque.

She’s a beaut!

The guy I bought it off gave me a jug of 10w40 and said ‘this is what the shop said to use’ its full synthetic but after looking around I’ll probably add a zinc additive to each oil change

She also has a mild cam in her, more the reason to use the additive
